TL;DR

Coinbase is worth it if you will trade on Coinbase Advanced, where there is no spread and maker and taker fees fall with volume, or if you value the subscription's account protection. For simple buys and sells it is harder to budget: Coinbase adds a spread and a Coinbase fee that it calculates per order, and it publishes no fixed rate for either.

The subscription does not fix that for most buyers. Coinbase One Basic costs $4.99 a month and waives trading fees on only $500 of trades a month, while Kraken+ charges the same price and covers $10,000. Matching that allowance on Coinbase takes Preferred at $29.99 a month, six times the price.

Two costs survive every tier: the 1% execution fee on simple limit orders and the 35% commission Coinbase keeps on staking rewards, which members cut to between 25.25% and 31.75% on eligible assets.

Coinbase sells convenience, and the price of convenience is set per trade. Its fee disclosure says the Coinbase fee depends on payment method, order size, market conditions, location and asset, and that fees may vary for similar transactions. The number you pay appears on the order preview screen, not on a public rate card.

Finpresso data: at Coinbase One's printed prices, the zero-fee allowance costs $1 for every $100 of monthly trades on Basic and $1 for about every $333 on Preferred. Kraken+ waives fees on 20 times Basic's allowance for the same subscription price.

Methodology: every figure on this page was checked on October 19, 2026 against Coinbase's pricing and fees disclosures, its Coinbase One page and help article, and its Coinbase Advanced fees article, plus Kraken's fee schedule, the Kraken+ page and Gemini's ActiveTrader fee schedule. Break-even and allowance figures are our arithmetic from those printed prices. All of it comes from the vendors' published pages.

What is Coinbase?

Coinbase is a US crypto exchange and app for buying, selling, converting, staking and sending cryptocurrency. It has two trading screens: the simple Coinbase app, where prices include a spread, and Coinbase Advanced, which trades directly against the order book.

Coinbase One is the paid layer. It is a monthly or yearly membership in three tiers that waives trading fees on simple trades up to a monthly limit, raises staking rewards, and adds account takeover protection. Coinbase says it has no payment for order flow relationships with market makers, and trades from your primary balance run through Coinbase Exchange's order book or auctions.

How Coinbase works

Simple trades carry two costs. Coinbase includes a spread in the quoted price, which it says lets it lock in the quote while you review the order, and it may keep any excess spread. On top of that it charges a Coinbase fee calculated when you place the order. Both appear on the order preview screen and in your transaction history.

Limit orders cost more. On simple limit orders Coinbase charges a separate 1% limit order execution fee and may also charge a Coinbase fee of 1.875%, depending on payment method. A $1,000 limit buy can therefore cost $10 in execution fee plus up to $18.75 in Coinbase fee, before the spread. Coinbase One does not waive the execution part, so a member who trades with limit orders still pays it.

Coinbase Advanced removes the spread. You pay a maker or taker fee set by your tier, based on 30-day trading volume or USDC balance, whichever gives the better tier. In the US the entry spot tier is 0.50% maker and 0.90% taker, in effect since 16 September 2026 according to Coinbase's announcement, and lower tiers start at $10,000 of qualifying volume. That entry rate sits above Kraken Pro's 0.40% and 0.80% and below Gemini ActiveTrader's 0.60% and 1.20%.

Coinbase pricing

Simple trades. Coinbase publishes no fixed fee for simple buys and sells. The spread and the Coinbase fee are set per order and shown in the preview, so the only way to compare is to preview the same order on two platforms. Kraken, by contrast, prints a 1% fee on instant and recurring trades and 1.5% on custom orders, with a spread on top.

Coinbase One break-even. Basic pays for itself only if the fees you would pay on its monthly allowance exceed the subscription, which takes a fee rate of about 1%. Preferred pays once your fees on its larger allowance pass about 0.3%. Yearly billing saves $9.89 on Basic, $59.89 on Preferred and $599.89 on Premium against 12 monthly payments.

Staking. The standard commission is 35% of rewards for ADA, ATOM, AVAX, DOT, ETH, MATIC, SOL and XTZ. Members pay 31.75% on Basic, 28.5% on Preferred and 25.25% on Premium for ADA, ATOM, DOT, ETH, SOL and XTZ. Kraken's flexible staking on assets with an unbonding period takes 20%.

Transfers and smaller fees. Lightning Network sends cost 0.2% of the bitcoin sent, USDT withdrawals 0.01% capped at 20 USDT plus network fees, and net USDC conversions above $5 million in 30 days 0.10%. Spending with the Coinbase Card has no transaction fee, though a spread applies.

Coinbase pros and cons

What we like

  • Coinbase Advanced has no spread, and its fee tier counts either 30-day volume or USDC balance, whichever is better.
  • Transfers between Coinbase users cost nothing, and Coinbase Card spending has no transaction fee.
  • Coinbase One Premium adds account takeover protection up to $250,000, available in the US.

What could be better

  • Basic waives fees on only $500 a month, a twentieth of what Kraken+ covers at the same price.
  • Simple limit orders pay a 1% execution fee that no Coinbase One tier waives.

Who Coinbase is for

Coinbase fits a buyer who wants one regulated US app for buying, staking, sending and occasionally trading on an order book, and who will read the preview screen before each order. Moving the same money to Coinbase Advanced instead of the simple screen removes the spread, which is the cheapest habit change available on the platform.

Coinbase One fits two profiles. Preferred suits someone trading several thousand dollars a month on the simple screen, because its allowance pays once fees pass about 0.3% of the volume it covers. Premium suits a large holder who values account takeover protection up to $250,000, available in the US, France and Singapore.

It is the wrong buy for a small, regular buyer who wants a printed fee. Basic's allowance is small, and a buyer of $1,000 a month gets twenty times the fee-free room from Kraken+ at the same price.

Mistakes to avoid
×Buying on the simple screen out of habit. Coinbase Advanced has no spread, and the simple screen adds one to every quote.
×Subscribing to Basic for large purchases. Its fee-free allowance is small, and anything above it pays the normal fee.
×Expecting Coinbase One to cover limit orders. The limit order execution fee applies on every tier, so members who place limit orders still pay it.
×Ignoring the staking commission. Coinbase's standard commission takes over a third of rewards on the main assets unless you are a member.

The bottom line

Use Coinbase Advanced for anything you trade more than once, and preview every simple order. The simple screen's spread and per-order fee are the costs Coinbase does not print, and Coinbase One Basic waives fees on too small an allowance to change that for most buyers.

Compare Kraken first if you buy a fixed amount every month: it prints its instant-trade fee in advance, and its subscription covers 20 times the fee-free volume of Coinbase's Basic tier for the same price. Our Coinbase fees breakdown goes line by line through every charge, and stock investors can set this against the Robinhood review and the investing apps ranking.

Every sale, swap and staking reward is a tax event to track. The crypto tax software ranking and the Koinly review cover the tools that import Coinbase history.

This page is general information, not personalized financial advice, and it makes no recommendation to buy or sell any crypto asset. Confirm the live fees and terms with Coinbase on the order preview screen before you trade, subscribe or stake.

Frequently asked questions

Is Coinbase worth it in 2026?

Coinbase is worth it if you will use Coinbase Advanced, which has no spread and volume-based maker and taker fees, or want account takeover protection from Coinbase One. For simple buys the cost is a spread plus a Coinbase fee set per order, which Coinbase does not publish in advance, so preview the same order elsewhere before you settle on it.

How much does Coinbase charge per trade?

Simple trades include a spread and a Coinbase fee that depends on payment method, order size, market conditions, location and asset, shown on the order preview screen. Simple limit orders add a 1% execution fee and may carry a 1.875% Coinbase fee. Coinbase Advanced charges maker and taker fees by tier with no spread, starting at 0.50% maker and 0.90% taker in the US.

Is Coinbase One worth it?

Only if the fees you avoid exceed the subscription. Basic at $4.99 a month waives fees on up to $500 of trades, so it pays once your fees on that amount pass about 1%. Preferred at $29.99 covers a much larger monthly volume and pays once fees pass about 0.3%. Neither waives the spread or the limit order execution fee.

How much does Coinbase take from staking rewards?

Coinbase charges no fee to stake but keeps a commission of 35% of rewards on ADA, ATOM, AVAX, DOT, ETH, MATIC, SOL and XTZ. Coinbase One members pay 31.75%, 28.5% or 25.25% on eligible assets depending on tier. Instant unstaking carries a fee disclosed when you request it.

Is Coinbase cheaper than Kraken?

For subscribers, Kraken+ covers far more. Kraken+ and Coinbase One Basic cost the same, but Kraken+ waives fees on up to $10,000 a month, 20 times Basic's allowance. Without a subscription, Kraken prints a 1% instant-trade fee, while Coinbase sets its simple-trade fee per order.
