Crypto Exchange Fees 2026: Buy, Trade and Withdrawal Costs Compared (Finpresso Data)
Crypto exchange fees in 2026 at Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini and Robinhood: entry taker fees from 0.80% to 1.20%, instant-buy spreads, and withdrawal costs.

A new US crypto trader pays 0.80% to 1.20% in taker fees on the order books of Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini and Robinhood in 2026, and more through simple buy screens, which add a spread. Kraken Pro is cheapest at entry level (0.40% maker, 0.80% taker); Gemini ActiveTrader costs most (0.60% and 1.20%).
We read the fee schedules of Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini and Robinhood Crypto on October 21, 2026, covering their simple buy screens, their order-book trading products, cash transfers and crypto withdrawals.
Finpresso data: in our analysis of a $1,000 market order at each exchange's entry tier, the trading fee runs from $8 at Kraken Pro to $12 at Gemini ActiveTrader, and a trader who reaches the first volume tier sees the gap widen, because Kraken cuts its taker fee by more than half at that level while Gemini cuts its own by a third and Robinhood by about a fifth.
The fee table
Entry-tier rates for a US customer with no trading history, as printed on each exchange's own schedule.
| Exchange | Order-book product, entry maker / taker | Simple buy screen | Staking commission | Withdrawals |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coinbase | Advanced: 0.50% / 0.90% | Spread plus a Coinbase fee shown in the order preview; simple limit orders add a 1% execution fee | 35% standard | US wire out $25; crypto at Coinbase's network fee estimate |
| Kraken | Kraken Pro: 0.40% / 0.80% | 1% on instant and recurring trades, 1.5% on custom orders, plus a spread | 20% on flexible staking for assets with an unbonding period | Cash and crypto fees vary by method and currency, shown before you confirm |
| Gemini | ActiveTrader: 0.60% / 1.20% | Fee and spread shown on the trade review screen; no fixed rate published | Not compared | ACH free, US wire out $25; crypto at the network fee |
| Robinhood Crypto | Exchange routing: 0.50% / 0.95% | No commission; Robinhood receives $0.95 per $100 traded from the market maker, inside the spread | 25% | Crypto transfers $0 plus network fee |
Read October 21, 2026. Coinbase's Advanced rates took effect on September 16, 2026, and Robinhood's fee schedule is the June 2026 version on its legal page.
The cheapest exchange depends on the screen you use more than on the brand. Every one of the four runs two prices for the same coin: a simple buy button with a spread built in, and an order book with a published maker and taker fee. A buyer who taps "Buy" pays the first price, and a buyer who places an order on the trading screen pays the second.
What a $1,000 trade costs at the entry tier
A $1,000 market order costs $8 to $12 in published trading fees, and a resting limit order $4 to $6. Both columns are our arithmetic: order size times the printed entry rate, before any spread or network fee.
| Exchange and product | Market order (taker) | Limit order that rests (maker) |
|---|---|---|
| Kraken Pro | $8.00 | $4.00 |
| Coinbase Advanced | $9.00 | $5.00 |
| Robinhood exchange routing | $9.50 | $5.00 |
| Gemini ActiveTrader | $12.00 | $6.00 |
The maker column is the cheap lane on every exchange. Posting a limit order below the market price and waiting for it to fill cuts the fee roughly in half at all four, so a buyer who is not in a hurry has little reason to pay the taker rate.
Robinhood's default route is a different model. Orders sent to market makers carry no commission, and Robinhood's order routing page says that as of June 15, 2026 it receives $0.95 for every $100 of crypto traded that way, inside the spread. On the order size above, that is $9.50 of spread revenue to Robinhood, close to what its own exchange-routing taker fee would charge.
The simple buy screen costs more
The tap-to-buy screens are where fees are least visible. Coinbase and Gemini both quote a spread plus a fee in the order preview instead of a fixed percentage, and both say the amount varies with payment method, order size, market conditions and asset. You see the real number only on the review screen, so check it before confirming.
Kraken is the exception that prints a rate: 1% on instant and recurring buys and 1.5% on custom orders, plus a spread it does not fix. That makes Kraken's app the easiest to price in advance, and its subscription changes the math for regular buyers.
Kraken+ costs $4.99 a month (or $49.99 a year) and waives the instant-buy fee on up to $10,000 of monthly volume, though the spread and card processing fees still apply. At the 1% rate, the subscription pays for itself once you buy more than $499 a month through the app; a buyer of twice that amount each month, on monthly billing, saves about $60 a year after the subscription, on our arithmetic. Coinbase sells a comparable subscription, Coinbase One, but its zero-fee benefit does not cover the 1% limit order fee or the spread.
Limit orders on Coinbase's simple screen are a trap worth naming. Coinbase charges a 1% execution fee on each simple limit buy or sell, and may also charge a 1.875% Coinbase fee, depending on payment method. Place the same order on Coinbase Advanced and it pays the Advanced maker rate instead, about half the simple-screen execution fee before any Coinbase fee is counted.
Volume tiers: who rewards active traders
The entry rates above apply until you trade enough to climb a tier. All four set the first step at $10,000 of 30-day volume, and the rates at that step are where the exchanges differ most.
| Exchange | Other ways to qualify for the first tier | Maker / taker at that tier |
|---|---|---|
| Kraken Pro | Or $20,000 of assets held | 0.22% / 0.38% |
| Gemini ActiveTrader | Or $1 million of assets | 0.40% / 0.80% |
| Robinhood exchange routing | Volume only; the tier runs to $50,000 | 0.35% / 0.75% |
| Coinbase Advanced | USDC balances can count toward VIP status | Shown on the Advanced fees page after sign-in |
A trader at that volume on Kraken Pro pays 0.38% as a taker, about half of what Robinhood and Gemini charge at the same volume, which over a year of active trading is the largest saving on this page. Kraken also lets assets on the platform count toward the tier, so a long-term holder can reach lower fees without trading more. Coinbase lowered its first Advanced threshold from $25,000 in September, but it shows tier rates only inside a signed-in account, which makes it the hardest of the four to price before opening one.
At the top of the ladders, the fees converge toward zero: Kraken Pro charges 0% maker from $10 million of monthly volume, Gemini from $50 million, and Robinhood at $25 million or more. Those tiers matter to funds, not individuals.
Getting money in and out
Withdrawal costs split into cash transfers and crypto sends, and the exchanges price them very differently.
Cash. Coinbase charges $10 for an incoming US wire and $25 for an outgoing one, per its funding guide. Gemini's transfer fee schedule lists ACH deposits and withdrawals and incoming wires as free, outgoing USD wires at $25, debit card deposits at 3.49% and PayPal deposits at 2.50%. Kraken says its cash deposit and withdrawal fees depend on the method and currency and appear before you confirm. A buyer funding with a debit card on Gemini pays more in that deposit fee than in any trading fee on this page.
Crypto. Robinhood charges $0 to transfer crypto out, plus the network fee. Gemini charges a dynamic withdrawal fee that tracks the network fee and says it does not keep it. Coinbase charges its estimate of the network fee for a standalone send, which can exceed what it pays after batching, plus 0.2% on bitcoin sent over Lightning and 0.01% (capped at 20 USDT) on USDT withdrawals. Kraken's crypto withdrawal fees can be fixed or variable, and may include a percentage.
For a buyer who plans to move coins to a hardware wallet, the network fee is the floor everywhere; what differs is whether the exchange adds a margin on top, and Robinhood and Gemini say they do not.
Stablecoins and staking
Stablecoin trades are the cheapest on every book. Gemini charges 0% on RLUSD/USD, USDC/GUSD and GUSD/USD; Kraken charges 0.20% maker and taker on stablecoin and FX pairs at entry volume; Coinbase charges a 0.10% processing fee on net USDC conversions above $5 million in 30 days, and nothing below that.
Staking commissions come out of your rewards rather than your balance. Coinbase takes 35% as standard, with lower rates for Coinbase One members on some assets; Robinhood takes 25%; Kraken takes 20% on flexible staking for assets with an on-chain unbonding period. On a reward stream, that difference compounds: of every $100 in rewards, a Coinbase staker keeps $65 and a Kraken flexible staker $80.
Which exchange is cheapest for you
For a one-off buyer using the app, Kraken is the only one of the four that prints its instant-buy fee, so it is the easiest to compare; on Coinbase and Gemini, read the order preview before confirming. Robinhood charges no commission but earns from the spread. Our Coinbase fees and Kraken fees breakdowns walk through each app's screens.
For a regular monthly buyer, a subscription can beat paying per trade: Kraken+ waives the instant-buy fee up to its monthly cap. Moving the same buys to the order book with limit orders is cheaper still on any of the four.
For an active trader, Kraken Pro has the lowest published rates at both the entry tier and the first volume tier. The best crypto exchanges list weighs fees with asset coverage and security, and Coinbase vs Robinhood compares the two app-first options directly. The Coinbase review and Robinhood review cover the rest of each account.
At tax time, every one of these trades is a taxable event to track. Our best crypto tax software ranking and the Koinly review cover the tools that import exchange histories. If you also hold stocks, our brokerage fees 2026 index applies the same method to eight US brokers.
How we built this index
We read each exchange's own fee pages on October 21, 2026: Coinbase's pricing and fees disclosures, its Advanced fees guide and the September 2026 announcement of its Advanced rates; Kraken's fee schedule and Kraken+ page; Gemini's ActiveTrader, Gemini mode and transfer fee schedules; and Robinhood Crypto's fee schedule and order routing page. Rates are for US customers at the entry tier unless a row says otherwise. Dollar figures multiply a $1,000 order by the printed rate and exclude spreads, payment fees and network fees. We did not open accounts or place trades.

Since September 16, 2026, a US trader at the entry tier pays 0.50% as a maker and 0.90% as a taker on Coinbase Advanced. Tiers now start at a lower qualifying volume than before September, and the rates for higher tiers appear on the Advanced fees page after sign-in.
How much does it cost to withdraw from a crypto exchange?
Crypto withdrawals cost at least the blockchain network fee everywhere; Robinhood charges nothing on top, and Gemini says it does not keep its dynamic fee. Cash withdrawals vary: ACH is free on Gemini, while outgoing US wires cost $25 on both Gemini and Coinbase.
