FreeTaxUSA vs TurboTax 2026: $0 Federal or Expert Help?
FreeTaxUSA vs TurboTax in 2026: federal $0 and state $15.99 on every return, against TurboTax at $0 to $139 plus state. Five returns priced on both.

Choose FreeTaxUSA unless your return is a simple Form 1040 or you want an expert to prepare it for you. FreeTaxUSA charges $0 for every federal return, including freelancing, investments and rentals, plus $15.99 per state. TurboTax is free only for simple returns (it says roughly 37% of taxpayers qualify), then charges $79 to $139 federal on its do-it-yourself tiers, plus state.
Those prices are for 2025 tax-year returns, as of October 2026, on FreeTaxUSA's pricing page and TurboTax's online filing page. That is the window extension filers are working in, with the October 15 deadline just passed; prices for 2026 returns, filed in early 2027, had not been posted when we checked.
Toolradar data: of the 42 tax software tools Toolradar tracks in its October 2026 snapshot on FreeTaxUSA's profile, only 15 offer a free plan, and FreeTaxUSA's entry price, its state return, ranks #5 of 21 against a median of $24.92. Toolradar is the software directory we run.

How the two price a return
FreeTaxUSA prices support, not forms. Every federal form it handles is free, from Schedule C self-employment to Schedule E rentals and Schedule K-1 partnership income, and it says it supports over 350 credits and deductions. You pay one flat fee per state, then choose how much help you want: free email support, $7.99 Deluxe for live chat and unlimited amended returns, or $64.99 Pro Support.
TurboTax prices your tax situation. The tier you need depends on what is on your return. Free Edition covers W-2 income, simple interest and dividends, the standard deduction, the Earned Income and Child Tax Credits, student loan interest and the new Schedule 1-A deductions for tips, overtime, car loan interest and seniors. Itemizing, unemployment income, 1099-NEC income, stock sales and rentals each push you to a paid tier, and TurboTax asks you to upgrade mid-return if it finds one of them.
That difference is the whole comparison. A filer whose return fits Free Edition pays nothing at TurboTax and only the state fee at FreeTaxUSA. Everyone else pays FreeTaxUSA's same flat price while TurboTax's bill climbs with each form.
Five returns priced on both
Each row below is one federal return plus one state, at list price, using the cheapest tier that covers the situation.
| Return | FreeTaxUSA | TurboTax | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| W-2 only, standard deduction | $15.99 | Free (Free Edition) | TurboTax saves the state fee |
| Homeowner who itemizes | State fee only | $143 (Deluxe) | FreeTaxUSA saves $127.01 |
| Freelancer, investor or landlord | State fee only | $203 (Premium) | FreeTaxUSA saves $187.01 |
| Freelancer who wants an expert's review | $80.98 (Pro Support) | $278 (Expert Assist Premium) | FreeTaxUSA saves $197.02 |
| Someone else prepares and files it | Not offered | From $198 (Full Service) | TurboTax only |
FreeTaxUSA's saving grows as the return gets more complicated, because its price never moves with the forms. The single row where TurboTax wins is the simplest return, and it wins by less than the price of a state filing.
Full Service is the one TurboTax product with no FreeTaxUSA equivalent. It starts at $129 federal for a W-2 and a Form 1040, plus $69 per state, and TurboTax's own price estimator adds charges per form: $100 for a Schedule C, $80 for itemized deductions on Schedule A and $40 for a Form 1099-B of stock sales, among others. A freelancer with a Schedule C therefore starts near $298 before any other forms.
Expert help: Pro Support vs Expert Assist
This is the closest real contest, and FreeTaxUSA still costs far less. Pro Support adds personalized advice from a Tax Pro by call or chat, unlimited amended returns and a ProCheck final review, where a tax pro walks through the parts of your return you flag, from income and rentals to deductions and credits, before you file. It costs the same $64.99 whatever your return contains.
TurboTax Expert Assist gives unlimited on-demand advice from Intuit tax experts, whom TurboTax describes as averaging 12 years of experience, and a final expert review of the entire return with its accuracy guarantee. Its price depends on the tier: $59 on Basic for simple returns, $129 on Deluxe and $209 on Premium, plus $59 to $69 per state.
Pick Expert Assist if you want the option of moving to Full Service with the same company, or if TurboTax's interview and document import matter to you. Pick Pro Support if you mainly want a professional to check a return you prepared yourself.
Free filing: where TurboTax is actually cheaper
TurboTax Free Edition includes a free state return for qualifying simple returns, while FreeTaxUSA always charges for state. For a W-2 earner with no itemized deductions, TurboTax is the cheaper choice. It also offers a path to full preparation later, which FreeTaxUSA does not.
The risk is the upgrade prompt. If you start in Free Edition and enter anything outside the simple-return list, such as an unemployment 1099-G, a crypto sale or a single 1099-NEC, TurboTax asks you to move to a paid product. That moment is when comparing makes sense, because the same return costs only the state fee at FreeTaxUSA. Our Is TurboTax free? guide lists exactly which forms trigger the upgrade, and how to file taxes for free covers IRS Free File as another route.
Where FreeTaxUSA falls short
FreeTaxUSA's weak spots are coverage at the edges and hands-off filing. Its Foreign Tax Credit (Form 1116) support is limited to interest and dividend income, so an expat or anyone with foreign wages or business income should check that form before starting. There is no option to hand the whole return to a preparer, so a filer who does not want to answer the interview at all has to look elsewhere.
Support is also tiered by price. The free tier is email and the in-app support center; live chat starts at Deluxe, and a conversation with an actual Tax Pro needs Pro Support. TurboTax gives product-specialist help on every paid tier, which matters to filers who get stuck often and would rather not pay a second time for help.
Extra fees that change the bill
- Paying from your refund. FreeTaxUSA charges $24.99 to take its fee out of your federal refund; TurboTax says a $40 service fee may apply to the same option. Paying by card avoids both.
- Amended returns. FreeTaxUSA charges $16.98 for a current-year amendment unless you bought Deluxe or Pro Support, which include unlimited amendments. TurboTax's paid tiers let you amend a 2025 return online through October 31, 2028.
- Audit protection. FreeTaxUSA sells Audit Defense, with CPAs and enrolled agents, for $19.99. TurboTax includes free audit guidance and sells full representation separately, at a price its filing page does not list.
- Prior-year returns. FreeTaxUSA files 2018 to 2024 returns with free federal and a $17.99 state return.
- Printed copies. FreeTaxUSA mails a professionally printed return for $8.96, shipping included; downloading and printing it yourself is free.
Who should pick which
Pick FreeTaxUSA if you itemize, freelance, trade stocks or crypto, or own a rental, and you are comfortable answering the interview yourself. For most of those filers the state fee is the whole bill, and $80.98 with a Tax Pro checking the work. Our FreeTaxUSA review covers the interview and its limits.
Pick TurboTax if your return fits Free Edition, or if you want an expert to prepare and file the whole return through Full Service. The TurboTax vs H&R Block comparison covers the other full-service option, and the H&R Block review prices it in detail.
Self-employed filers weighing more than these two should read the best tax software for the self-employed ranking, and budget filers can compare the TaxAct review and the Cash App Taxes review. Crypto traders with many transactions need the best crypto tax software list first. Directory profiles are at FreeTaxUSA on Toolradar and TurboTax on Toolradar.
How we compared
We read FreeTaxUSA's pricing page and TurboTax's online filing page, including its price catalog and the Full Service estimator, in US dollars in October 2026 (FreeTaxUSA on its 6 October 2026 version, TurboTax on 18 October). The five returns are our own arithmetic: the cheapest tier covering each situation plus one state return, at list price. We did not file returns on either service. TurboTax notes that its prices are set at the time you print or e-file and can change without notice, so check both before you start.
