How to File Taxes for Free in 2026: IRS Free File and Other Free Options Compared
IRS Free File covers federal returns for free up to $89,000 of AGI. See the eligibility rules, the free options that go further, and the October 15 deadline.
You can file a federal return for $0 through IRS Free File if your adjusted gross income was $89,000 or less and a trusted partner's offer covers your forms. Fillable Forms has no income cap, but it does not do state returns. If you requested an extension, you have until October 15, 2026 to file without penalties.
This page covers the free options the IRS names for this filing season: Free File partners, Fillable Forms, volunteer help through VITA and TCE, and MilTax for military households. It says who each one fits, what each one leaves out, and how to choose in five steps. Every limit and deadline comes from an IRS page. We quote no partner prices, because each partner sets its own terms.
Toolradar data: Toolradar tracks 40 tax software products as of October 10, 2026, and 11 of them (28%) list a free plan, per its tax software ranking. That is a ceiling for free software in general, not a count of free options for a personal return.

| VITA | Taxpayers who generally meet the EITC income guidelines | Free basic preparation for qualified people | Ask the local site | IRS VITA |
| TCE | People 60 and older | Free basic preparation | Ask the local site | IRS VITA |

The cap is adjusted gross income, not pay
The IRS sets the guided-software limit as a ceiling on adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less. It states that on its Free File page, updated June 12, 2026, and in its March 20, 2026 news release. AGI is not your paycheck. It is your total income after adjustments such as deductible traditional IRA contributions and student loan interest, which lower the number before the limit applies.
Take a $95,000 salary with $8,000 paid into a traditional IRA. The AGI is $87,000, under the line. A $98,000 salary with the same contribution leaves $90,000, over the line, even though the paycheck is only $3,000 higher. Whether you can deduct the IRA contribution depends on your own situation, so work out your figure before you pick a path.
Partners set their own eligibility, and the IRS says it does not endorse any individual partner. The IRS partner list shows eight trusted partners and tells you that you are responsible for confirming you qualify for a free federal return. The IRS Free File page also names EzTaxReturn.com for Spanish-language filing. Read the forms list before you start, because a cap tells you who might qualify, not whether a partner supports the schedules you need.
Free Fillable Forms: no income cap, no state return
Fillable Forms is the free option for people above the cap. The IRS says it is available at any income level. You enter your information into the online IRS forms and follow the form instructions. The calculations are limited, so you do more of the arithmetic yourself than you would in a guided interview.
It leaves out two things. It does not cover state returns, and it cannot prepare or file amended returns. If you need a state return, pick a guided partner whose offer includes one. If you have to correct a return you already filed, Fillable Forms cannot do that, so check what the other options cover first.
Pick Fillable Forms when your federal return is fairly simple, your income sits above the partner cap, and you are comfortable checking your own work. The software costs nothing, but the time cost is real. A return with more forms takes longer to finish than one a guided interview walks you through.
VITA and TCE: free help from volunteers
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites offer free basic return preparation to qualified individuals. The IRS says the program generally focuses on taxpayers who meet the Earned Income Tax Credit income guidelines, so it is aimed at lower incomes rather than at the partner cap. A volunteer site is a strong route when your return is simple and your income falls within those guidelines.
Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) is the same kind of free help for older filers. The IRS says the program particularly serves people 60 and older. If you are in that group, ask a TCE site first, because the help is free.
Sites set their own hours and eligibility rules, so check the IRS VITA page and call ahead before you go. Bring last year's return, your income forms, and any IRS notices you received. MilTax for military households
The IRS describes MilTax as free e-filing for eligible military members and certain veterans, and it includes state e-filing. The other options on this page do not promise a free state return, which makes MilTax the first thing to check if you qualify.
Five steps to choose a free path
- Work out your AGI for the return you are filing, not your salary. Subtract the adjustments you can claim, and use that figure for the cap.
- If your AGI is within the cap, open the IRS list of trusted partners and pick one whose forms cover your return. Read the federal offer and the state price line before you start.
- If your AGI is over the cap, or the partner forms do not fit your return, use Fillable Forms for the federal return and handle the state return on its own path.
- If you qualify for VITA or TCE, book a site first. The help is free, and a trained volunteer prepares the return with you.
- If you cannot finish in time, check whether you filed an extension. If you did, you have until October 15. If you did not, file as soon as possible.
What to gather before you start
Collect every W-2 and 1099 you received, and last year's return. E-file software typically asks for your prior-year AGI to verify your identity, so the old return saves a step. Keep your bank routing and account numbers handy if you want direct deposit, and gather any receipts for deductions or credits you plan to claim.
A missing form can stop a partner's interview halfway through and force a restart. Check each form's names and numbers against last year's return before you enter anything.
When free software is the wrong tool
Free software is the wrong tool when a state return is essential and the partner's state line is unclear, or when your return carries business income, rental activity, or sales of investments that the partner's forms list does not cover. In those cases, a paid preparer or a paid software tier may be the better buy.
If you want to compare paid options against the free ones, our TurboTax Free Edition page explains where that product's free tier ends. The same comparison for TurboTax is not repeated here. If you want to look at the products side by side before you start, Toolradar has profiles for TurboTax, FreeTaxUSA, and TaxAct.
The October 15 deadline applies to extensions
If you asked for an extension by the April due date, the IRS gives you until October 15, 2026 to file without penalties. The IRS extension page, updated September 20, 2026, adds the rule that matters more: pay any tax you owe by the April filing date. An extension buys time to file, not time to pay, and interest runs on the tax you still owe.
If you did not request an extension, October 15 does not apply to you. A free option still works, so file now. Penalties and interest keep adding up until the return is in.
Do not wait for the last weekend before October 15. Gather your forms and choose a path now.
Where the free route gets expensive
The cost usually shows up at the state return and at the checkout. Fillable Forms has no state return at all, so the state line is the one to price before you start.
Read the checkout before you pay. A free federal offer covers the federal return only, so check the state line on that page too. Confirm each line before you enter a card, and keep a screenshot of the price you agreed to.
Self-employment narrows the free route in a different way. If you have business income, check each partner's forms list before you file, because the AGI cap says nothing about which schedules a partner supports. If you sold crypto, the crypto tax software ranking covers tools built for those forms. If you file for clients rather than yourself, accountant tax software covers the professional side.
Freelancers who track income before filing can compare free accounting software. Our FreshBooks review and Wave review cover two invoicing options for freelancers, and if you need to separate freelance income, see business bank accounts.
Frequently asked questions
Is IRS Free File really free?
For a federal return, yes, if your AGI is at or below the IRS cap and the partner's offer covers your forms. The IRS says partners set their own eligibility.
What is the income limit for IRS Free File?
The IRS lists adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less for guided tax software, on a Free File page updated June 12, 2026. Fillable Forms has no income limit, but it does not support state returns.
Can I file for free if I earn more than the cap?
Yes, through Fillable Forms, which the IRS offers at any income level. You do the calculations yourself, and it does not cover state returns. VITA is aimed at the Earned Income Tax Credit income guidelines, so it is less likely to fit a higher income.
Is there a free way to file a state return?
Sometimes. The IRS says some Free File partners include a free state return and others may charge a fee. MilTax covers state e-filing for eligible military members and certain veterans. Fillable Forms does not support state returns, so price the state line before you start.
What is the deadline if I requested an extension?
October 15, 2026, per the IRS: you have until that date to file without penalties. Pay any tax you owe by the April due date, because an extension gives you time to file, not time to pay.
How we checked this
We read the IRS pages linked in this article on October 10, 2026, along with the IRS news release on free filing options for 2026, and Toolradar's tax software ranking the same day. Each limit, date and eligibility rule comes from those pages, with the update date the page printed. Partner prices are not quoted because each partner sets its own terms.
