Best Free Accounting Software in 2026
Zoho Books stays free under a written revenue cap. Wave Pro is $19/mo when the bank feed is the job, and GnuCash 5.16 is a download you never cancel.
Zoho Books is the free ledger to open in 2026 when revenue stays under $50,000 and an accountant needs a login. Wave Starter stays free if you upload the statement, and Pro at $19/mo, or $190/yr, is where the bank feed lives.
GnuCash 5.16 never bills, for a bookkeeper who keeps double-entry on one computer. Odoo is free only as the one app, and a second app makes every user a paid seat. ZipBooks Starter is free with one bank, which fits a freelancer rather than several accounts. Akaunting's free install is not a general ledger until you buy that app.

- 9 tools compared: Zoho Books, Wave, GnuCash, Odoo, Manager, ZipBooks, Akaunting, Invoice Ninja, QuickBooks Online Free
- Wave (best for: Sole proprietors who will upload the bank file): Starter free; Pro $19/mo or $190/yr. Cards 2.9% + $0.60.
- GnuCash (best for: Bookkeepers who want double-entry on a local file): Free. Version 5.16 under the GPL. No subscription.

The best free accounting software in 2026 is the one that still produces a balance sheet after you stop paying. Zoho Books does that under a written revenue cap, so an accountant can log in before the year crosses that line.
Wave does it only if you upload the statement, so free stays a manual close. GnuCash does it on a laptop with nothing to cancel, and the file still opens.
Toolradar data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, evaluated 247 accounting tools in its September 2026 accounting ranking.
This free-plan cut is for founders and bookkeepers who close the month. Prices were verified on each vendor's pages in September 2026. The wider guide is on Toolradar, and later changes go in the Finpresso brief.

Zoho Books
A real ledger at no charge until the year crosses the revenue cap, then a published step up.
- Pricing
- Free under $50,000 revenue; Standard $20/mo or $15/mo billed annually.
Best for: US micro businesses that want an accountant on the free plan
Pros
- One user plus one accountant, with 1,000 invoices and 1,000 expenses a year, so two people can close without a paid seat.
- Statement import, reconciliation, a chart of accounts, and journals are free, so you can match a bank line before you pay.
- Standard includes 3 users, and third-party bank feeds start there, so the live connection is why the free plan ends.
Cons
- The free plan ends once financial-year revenue passes the cap, and the history you built is what you then pay to keep.
- Free scans stop at 50 a month, and 50 more are $10/mo or $8 billed annually, the first paid add-on.
Wave
Unlimited invoices and bookkeeping at no charge, with the bank feed on Pro, so the free close stays manual.
- Pricing
- Starter free; Pro $19/mo or $190/yr. Cards 2.9% + $0.60.
Best for: Sole proprietors who will upload the bank file
Pros
- Starter includes unlimited estimates, invoices, bills, bookkeeping records, and the app, so you can bill without a subscription.
- Cards cost 2.9% plus a fixed fee, Amex is 3.4% plus that fee, and Discover is US-only, so getting paid is not free.
- Pro adds Plaid, auto-categorize, and unlimited receipt capture, and waives the fixed fee on the first 10 charges that month.
Cons
- Editor, admin, and viewer seats are Pro, unless that person is a payroll manager or a Block Advisors tax pro on Starter.
- The fee is per business, Advisors bookkeeping starts at $149/mo, and payroll is a separate add-on with two published from-rates.
GnuCash
A free desktop ledger with stocks, scheduled transactions, and OFX import, and no cloud login to lose.
- Pricing
- Free. Version 5.16 under the GPL. No subscription.
Best for: Bookkeepers who want double-entry on a local file
Pros
- Double-entry books, reports, and stock, bond, and mutual fund accounts are free, so investments do not need a second program.
- QIF, OFX, and HBCI import with matching, plus scheduled transactions, so the bank file can arrive without a paid feed.
- Windows 8, 10, and 11, Apple Silicon macOS 11 and newer, and Intel macOS 10.13 and newer, so it runs locally.
Cons
- The books are a local file, with no hosted multi-user close and no payroll, so a second person cannot post at the same time.
- Support is the public mailing list, with no service desk and no uptime promise, which is the trade for never getting a bill.
Odoo
Full accounting for unlimited users at no charge, until a second app turns every login into a paid seat.
- Pricing
- One App Free. Standard lists US$31.10 and US$38.90/user/mo.
Best for: Teams that can keep accounting as the only app
Pros
- The pricing page and the 14 July 2026 guide both put full Accounting on One App Free, so free here is the ledger.
- Unlimited users on that one app, hosted on Odoo Online, including required dependencies, so a small team avoids seat fees.
- Leaving free for Standard means the two per-user figures in the table, for every backend user, so headcount becomes the bill.
Cons
- Installing another app moves you to Standard, and Studio or extra companies are a switch to Custom, so one module ends free.
- The free plan also allows multiple companies, while extra companies are described as Custom, so confirm checkout before you add an entity.
Manager
Desktop is free with no time limit and no ads, and you pay only when a second person shares the file.
- Pricing
- Desktop free, all features, single user. Cloud publishes no list price.
Best for: A single bookkeeper who wants every feature offline
Pros
- Desktop is fully featured with no time limit, no cap, and no ads, so free here is the whole product.
- The file moves between Windows, Mac, and Linux, and Manager says it restores into cloud, so you can start offline and move later.
- A cloud backup imports back into the free desktop, so stopping cloud does not trap the file if the quote is wrong.
Cons
- Desktop is single user, so a second person in the file at the same time requires cloud, and that is when free ends.
- Manager publishes no list price for cloud, so treat that edition as a quote rather than a number you can budget.
ZipBooks
A free starter with unlimited invoices and one bank, while reconciliation sits on a higher tier you will want later.
- Pricing
- Starter free, 1 bank. Smarter from $15/mo. Sophisticated listed as 35.
Best for: Freelancers who invoice and connect one bank
Pros
- Starter is free: unlimited invoices, customers, vendors, Square or PayPal, and basic reports, so billing needs no subscription.
- One bank connection is included before you pay, which covers a single operating account and not a stack of other accounts.
- Smarter adds recurring invoices, multiple banks, time tracking, and 5 team members, for when the free bank slot is the limit.
Cons
- Reconciliation, locked books, and unlimited users sit on Sophisticated, listed as 35 with no currency symbol, so do not assume dollars.
- The Accountant plan publishes no list price, so a firm login is a quote you cannot compare before you ask.
Akaunting
The free plans invoice and track expenses, and double-entry is a paid app you still have to buy before a close.
- Pricing
- On-prem Standard free. Cloud Standard $12/mo. Ledger features from $36/mo.
Best for: Teams that will self-host and then buy the ledger app
Pros
- On-prem Standard is free for 1 company, 1 user plus 1 accountant, and 1,000 invoices, before you buy the ledger.
- Cloud Standard is $12/mo, or $8/mo billed yearly, with the same caps, which is a hosted inbox and not yet a close.
- You own the self-hosted server, and Akaunting says it does not collect that data, which matters if the books must stay local.
Cons
- No plan includes apps, so the chart, ledger, and balance sheet on Cloud Premium are what close the month.
- The double-entry app publishes no list price of its own, so use the Premium rows in the table before you install.
Invoice Ninja
Five clients and unlimited invoices at no charge, while profit and loss and the bank feed are paid.
- Pricing
- Hosted free for 5 clients. Pro $14/mo or $140/yr.
Best for: Shops whose free need is invoicing, not a close
Pros
- The hosted free plan keeps 5 clients, unlimited invoices, recurring billing, and a portal, enough while you stay inside that cap.
- Pro is $14/mo or $140/yr and adds unlimited clients, US sales tax, and profit-and-loss reports, so the report is why you leave free.
- Self-hosting includes the Pro and Enterprise features under Elastic License 2.0, if you accept that license on your own server.
Cons
- Bank sync starts on Enterprise, from $18/mo for 2 users, and the free hosted plan has no profit and loss.
- Removing the brand on a self-hosted install is a yearly white-label license that auto-renews, a bill you can miss later.
QuickBooks Online Free
A real QuickBooks ledger at no cost, capped at one user, one bank feed and two invoices a month.
- Pricing
- Free plan: 1 user, 1 bank connection, 2 invoices a month. Paid plans $38 to $340/mo.
Best for: Solo owners who expect to move up to QuickBooks later
Pros
- It is the same QuickBooks Online ledger as the paid plans, so upgrading keeps your books and history in place.
- No credit card is required to start, and one bank connection covers a single business account.
Cons
- Two invoices a month and one user rule it out for any business that bills regularly or has a bookkeeper.
- There is no accountant access and support is chat only; Simple Start at $38/mo is the first plan that lifts those limits.
What it is
Free accounting software records invoices, bills, bank activity, and a chart of accounts without a subscription, or under a hard cap. A viewer or a receipt scanner is not this product.
The test is a bank line tied to a journal, and a profit and loss an accountant will sign.
Zoho Books, Wave, and ZipBooks are hosted, so learn the cap before a year of history becomes a paid file.
GnuCash and Manager keep the file on your machine, so a canceled card does not lock the books. Odoo hosts one app at no charge, and it stays a full ledger only while you never install a second app.
Akaunting and Invoice Ninja are free to install, but the hosted free tiers stop short of a full close.
How we compared: eight products with a real free path, plus Xero when the cap breaks, read on vendor pages in September 2026. The 247-tool Toolradar sample is the wider set.
Why it matters
The free tier fails at the second person or the bank connection, and that failure is the cost you did not budget. Wave Starter keeps the books and parks automatic import on Pro, so uploading the file is what stays free.
Zoho's free plan ends when the financial year crosses the cap, and you pay to keep that history. Odoo stays free until a second app, then every user becomes a paid seat.
Xero is the clean paid exit, and it is not free.
On the US pricing page, Early is an intro for the first 6 months, then $25/mo, with 20 invoices and 5 bills. Those months are a trial, and the plan renews at the regular rate. Growing renews at $55/mo and Established at $90/mo, which is the ladder once the free caps are already wrong.
That intro runs through 30 September 2026, and list prices rise from 1 October 2026, though the notice does not publish the new rates. Payroll is a Gusto add-on in the table, not part of the ledger plan. The account that has to match the feed is covered in the Mercury review.
A service close sits in the bookkeeping guide, and a ledger you already pay for sits in the AI accounting guide.
Key features to look for
Pricing
These free plans are different products, so the cap in the table is the decision. Zoho includes an accountant until the revenue cap, for when a second person needs the file. Wave moves the bank feed to Pro, so free means uploading the statement yourself.
GnuCash and Manager desktop do not bill, for one bookkeeper on one machine. Odoo is free until a second app, then Standard charges the per-user pair in the table. Akaunting's free tier stops before the ledger, which starts on Cloud Premium.
Xero Early is the paid step after a six-month intro, not a free plan. Every figure was read on the vendor's own page in September 2026.

The bottom line
Open Zoho Books when you are under the revenue cap and a second person must see the file. That free accountant seat is what the other hosted plans charge for. Stay on Wave Starter if you will upload the statement, and move to Pro when the bank feed is worth it.
Use GnuCash when the ledger should live on disk, and the GnuCash profile is the directory entry.
Choose Odoo only while accounting is the one app, and leave when inventory shows up, because that second app ends free.
Choose Manager for a one-person offline close, or ZipBooks for one bank until you need reconciliation. Choose Akaunting only after you price the double-entry app.
Choose Invoice Ninja if five clients is a cap you can live with.
Xero is the paid US ledger when those caps are already wrong, and the Xero review is the longer write-up. Vendor bills that should not live in the ledger belong in the BILL review.
Card spend belongs in the corporate cards guide.
