Northwest Registered Agent Review 2026: Formation Fee and Renewal
What the formation fee includes, what the agent costs after year one, and how Harbor, ZenBusiness, LegalZoom, and Bizee change a three-year bill.
Northwest is worth it in 2026 when you want one company to file an LLC and serve as its registered agent, and you will not send ordinary business mail to that address. Formation is $39 plus the state fee, and the agent is included for the first year, then $125 a year. Ordinary mail stops at five scans a year, and forwarding and report filing cost extra.
Harbor is the cheaper prepaid agent if the company is already formed. ZenBusiness, LegalZoom, and Bizee cost more per year for the agent alone.
Key factsBest for: Owners who want the LLC filed and a stable agent fee, with…
- A low formation fee, a stable yearly agent rate, and a hard cap on ordinary mail.
- Formation: A service fee on top of the state filing fee
- Agent in year one: Included when Northwest files the company
- Ordinary mail: Five scans a year on the agent plan
- Report filing: A separate service, plus the state fee
Pros
- The formation offer includes the first agent year, a domain, a website, email, a phone line, and legal forms, plus an operating agreement or bylaws on the incorporation page.
- The registered agent page says the yearly rate has not been raised in 20 years, with a lower per-state rate from five states.
- State and legal mail is scanned with no per-document charge, and Northwest says it does not sell customer data.
Cons
- Ordinary business mail stops at five scans a year, and unlimited forwarding is a monthly plan in 24 states.
- The annual report filing service is a separate charge plus the state fee, and the report page says you can be enrolled when you buy the agent.
- The free phone line allows ten calls and ten texts a month. The formation page does not say that this is the line included with the filing.
The renewal and the mail cap decide this purchase, because the formation sticker is only the opening invoice. A founder who buys Northwest for the low first bill still pays for the agent every year after, and pays again if the company needs a real mailbox.
Finpresso data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, tracks 11 entity management tools as of 17 October 2026. Carta is the most cross-shopped name in that set, listed as an alternative to 36 other tools. Northwest is not in the catalog. LegalZoom, ZenBusiness, and Bizee are, on the entity management ranking.
Our methodology: we read Northwest, Harbor Compliance, ZenBusiness, LegalZoom, and Bizee on each vendor's own pages on 17 October 2026, and we did not file a company. The order follows the published agent rate and what the sticker leaves out. Placement was not sold. The wider tables are registered agent cost and best registered agent services.
What is Northwest Registered Agent?
A registered agent is the person or company a state requires to accept lawsuits and official mail for an LLC, at a street address in that state, during business hours. Northwest sells that role and the filing that creates the company. Buy it when you want both from one checkout, and skip it when you only need a mailbox or a tax return.
The first year of registered agent service is included with formation, so it is not a second line on the opening invoice. The formation offer also includes a domain, a website, email, a business address, mail scanning, a phone line, brand protection, and legal forms. The incorporation page adds bylaws or an operating agreement if you do not already have them.
Northwest uses its own address on public filings where the state allows, and it does not sell customer data, so a home address can stay off that record. Some states still require the principal office, so a home address can remain on the form.
The ongoing rate is per state, and the registered agent page says it has not been raised in 20 years. A single-state owner can budget that same renewal each year. Five or more states use a lower per-state rate, which is why you stay once you are registered in that many places. Northwest has offices in all 50 states, DC, and Puerto Rico, not only the usual formation states.
A tax return is not part of this service, which rules out anyone who wants the filing and the taxes together. Our doola review covers a filing-and-tax bundle, and LLC formation services covers the wider set.
How Northwest Registered Agent works
Year one is the filing, and the agent is included rather than billed on its own. Northwest prepares the articles, uses its address where the state allows, and includes the agent for that year, which is why the first bill looks low.
After that, the agent continues at the yearly rate, so budget the renewal before year two. On auto-pay, cancel at least one business day before the next annual charge, and there is no cancellation fee, though a past-due balance can still be owed.
Mail splits into two piles, and that split makes the address a poor inbox. State and legal mail is scanned and uploaded with no per-document charge, which is the mail an agent exists to catch.
Ordinary business mail stops at five documents a year, so client and vendor letters will outgrow the included scans. Forwarding and a virtual office cost extra, and both are listed in only 24 states, so other states cannot buy past the cap.
The free phone line allows ten calls and ten texts a month, while unlimited talk and text is $9 a month per line. Taking the number with you costs the same amount, and the formation page does not name which plan is included, so the unlimited line may not be part of the filing.
You can be enrolled in report filing when you buy the agent, then charged when the report is filed, which can add an invoice you did not plan. After you cancel, a later legal document can require a renewal, a past-due payment, or an unprinted viewing fee, so the old account is not a free archive.

Northwest Registered Agent pricing
Prices were read on 17 October 2026 on Northwest's LLC, agent, incorporation, annual report, EIN, address, and phone pages, plus Harbor, ZenBusiness, LegalZoom, and Bizee.
$289 is the formation fee plus two agent renewals for one LLC in one state, ignoring every state fee. Three years of the agent alone comes to $375. Harbor's prepaid three-year plan is $297, which is $78 less than that agent-only total, but Northwest includes the filing, so these are not the same product. State fees sit on top of both, and the LLC cost guide is where those state charges belong.
Five or more states are $100 a year per state, so five states come to $500 a year, which is why you keep Northwest at that scale. Delaware vs Wyoming is a choice about where to form, not about which agent is cheaper. The report service is $100 plus the state fee, charged at filing, and you can be enrolled when you buy the agent. Add that service only in a year when the state actually wants a report.
The EIN fee is $50 with a Social Security number and $200 without one. The IRS charges nothing for the number, and Northwest's page says the same, so the fee is for the filing. See the free EIN guide if you would rather file the form yourself. Northwest does not sell Form 5472, so use the Form 5472 guide for that return.
Mail overtakes the agent fee when you need a real inbox. Forwarding is $20 a month and the virtual office is $29 a month, in the 24 states on the address page. Twelve months of forwarding is $240, more than a year of the agent, so ordinary mail makes this the expensive choice.
ZenBusiness leaves the agent out of every package, and Starter has no service fee, so you still budget the agent as its own line. Starter compliance is free for a year, then renews at Pro's yearly price. The website trial comes preselected and renews at $15 a month, and refunds inside 60 days exclude state fees.
LegalZoom covers the state fee if you are switching. Its contact page says the renewal rate can change, and the terms allow an increase with 30 days' notice, so today's rate is not locked in. Bizee includes a free first agent year with formation, then bills the standalone rate. A partner such as LegalInc can charge that renewal unless you name a new agent and tell Bizee before the term ends.

Who Northwest Registered Agent is for
Buy Northwest when the job is the LLC and a registered agent, you can file the EIN yourself, and ordinary mail will not hit that address. That fits a single-state owner who wants a home address off the public record, and the volume rate is why you stay once you register in five or more states.
Skip it when you need a real mailbox, because forwarding costs more across a year than the agent and is not offered in every state. Skip it when the report must sit inside the agent fee, or when you have no Social Security number and do not want a separate EIN invoice. A prepaid three-year agent, for a company that already exists, is Harbor's job rather than Northwest's.
Choose LegalZoom when you are switching and want the state fee for that change covered, which can offset a higher renewal. Choose ZenBusiness when compliance filings are in the package and you will add the agent on purpose. Choose Bizee when a free first agent year matters more than Northwest's lower renewal. The Finpresso brief is free if the next price change should land in the inbox.

The bottom line
Buy Northwest for the filing and a stable agent rate if ordinary mail will not hit that address. Budget the agent from year two, and leave the report service and the EIN service off the invoice if you will file those yourself.
Choose Harbor when the company already exists and you can prepay, because that path is the lower agent-only total. Choose ZenBusiness when compliance filings matter and the agent is its own line on the bill. Choose LegalZoom when you want the state switch fee covered, and choose Bizee when a free first year is worth a higher renewal.
State filing fees are not in any of these service prices, so add that state charge before you compare the service lines. This page is general information, not personalized financial advice, so confirm the current price, the renewal, and the state fee with Northwest and the other providers before you pay.
