Venmo Fees 2026: Instant Transfer, Goods and Services, Business

Venmo is free for the basics: sending money from your balance, bank or debit card, receiving a personal payment and the standard transfer to your bank all cost $0. You pay when you want speed or protection. Instant Transfer costs 1.75% (minimum $0.25, maximum $25), sending with a credit card costs 3%, a personal payment marked as goods and services costs the seller 2.99%, and a business profile pays 1.9% plus 10 cents. Every rate was read on Venmo's fee page on October 21, 2026.

The fees that hurt are the ones you choose without noticing, such as a credit card left as the default funding source or Instant Transfer used out of habit. For anyone selling through Venmo, the real decision is which profile to receive payments on, and the answer flips at a surprisingly low price. The worked examples below are our arithmetic on Venmo's printed rates.

Finpresso data: on our arithmetic, a seller who receives a $500 goods and services payment on a personal profile and cashes it out by Instant Transfer keeps $476.56 after $23.44 in fees, a 4.7% cut. The same $500 received on a business profile and moved with the free standard transfer costs $9.60, less than half as much. Toolradar data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, evaluated 191 payment processing tools for its payment processing ranking as of October 21, 2026, and 5 of its top 10 have a free plan. Venmo is not one of the 191, because it is sold as a consumer app rather than a processor, which is why its seller fees are easy to overlook.

Instant Transfer: where the minimum and the cap kick in

Instant Transfer costs 1.75% of the amount, never less than $0.25 and never more than $25. The standard option is free and, according to Venmo, typically arrives in 1 to 3 business days at a linked bank, or in about 48 hours at an eligible linked debit card. Instant Transfer typically lands in minutes.

The floor and the cap change the effective rate at both ends. The minimum applies to any transfer under about $14.29, so moving $5 instantly costs 5%. The cap applies from about $1,428.57 upward, so a $3,000 transfer costs $25, or about 0.83%. In between, the fee is the flat percentage: $1.75 on $100, $8.75 on $500 and $17.50 on $1,000.

If you can wait a day or two, the standard transfer saves the whole amount. Instant Transfer is worth it for a bill due today, and the cap makes large one-off withdrawals relatively cheap.

Sending money: debit is free, credit costs 3%

Sending to another Venmo user or a US PayPal account is free from your Venmo balance, a debit card or a linked bank. Funding the same payment with a credit card adds a 3% fee, so a $200 rent split charged to a credit card costs $6. Check which funding source the app has selected before you tap Pay, because a card left as default turns a free payment into a paid one.

Sending to an eligible non-US PayPal account costs 5%, with a $0.99 minimum and a $4.99 maximum, and a credit card adds another 3%. The cap is reached at about $99.80, so larger cross-border sends get cheaper in percentage terms. If the recipient receives a different currency, Venmo also builds a currency conversion spread of up to 4% into the exchange rate. Our Wise fees guide and Wise review cover a route built for international transfers.

Goods and services: who pays and how much

A personal payment marked as goods and services costs the seller 2.99%; the buyer pays nothing extra. Venmo's page says a seller transaction fee applies whenever the sender identifies the payment as for goods and services, and that receiving a plain personal payment is free. On a $100 sale, the seller keeps $97.01.

That fee exists because the payment is flagged as a sale. Friends splitting dinner should send it as a personal payment, which costs nothing. Anyone selling a couch, concert tickets or freelance work should expect the buyer to mark it as goods and services, and should price the 2.99% in.

Personal profile or business profile?

Above about $9.17 per payment, a business profile costs less than goods and services on a personal profile. Business profiles pay 1.9% plus 10 cents per payment, or 2.29% plus 9 cents through Tap to Pay. Our arithmetic on Venmo's rates:

Payment received Personal profile, goods and services Business profile Business profile, Tap to Pay
$5 $0.15 $0.20 $0.20
$50 $1.50 $1.05 $1.24
$100 $2.99 $2.00 $2.38
$500 $14.95 $9.60 $11.54

Below roughly $9, the 10-cent fixed fee makes the business profile the more expensive option, and Tap to Pay crosses over at about $12.86. The saving grows with the ticket: about a fifth of the fee at $20 and a third at $100. Cashing checks, adding cash and the debit card

Cashing a check in minutes through the Venmo app costs 2% for payroll and government checks and 5% for other accepted checks, each with a $6 minimum. The minimum dominates small checks: any payroll check under $300 and any other check under $120 costs the flat $6. Venmo charges nothing if the check cannot be added.

Adding cash at a participating store with the Venmo Debit Card costs $3.74. ATM withdrawals are free in the MoneyPass network in the US and cost $2.50 elsewhere, plus whatever the ATM owner charges. A signature cash withdrawal at a bank counter costs $3.

Travelers should note one new fee: from November 4, 2026, Venmo charges 2.5% on Venmo Debit Card purchases and withdrawals outside the US, even when no currency conversion takes place. Before that date the debit card carried no such fee, so check which card you pack. The Venmo Visa credit card lists no foreign transaction fee in its own rates table.

Crypto on Venmo

Buying or selling crypto costs 2.2% from $1 to $74.99, 2% from $75 to $200, 1.8% from $200.01 to $1,000 and 1.5% above $1,000. Those fees do not apply to PYUSD. A $500 purchase costs $9, and $2,000 costs $30. Receiving crypto and moving it to another Venmo or PayPal account is free, but sending to an outside address carries a network fee paid in the coin. If you buy regularly, an exchange order book usually costs far less; our best crypto exchanges guide and Coinbase fees explainer show the rates.

Ways to pay less on Venmo

  • Fund payments from your balance, bank or debit card, never a credit card, to avoid the 3% fee.
  • Use the free standard transfer unless you need the money today.
  • If you sell regularly at $10 or more per payment, open a business profile.
  • Batch small instant withdrawals into one larger transfer, so the $0.25 minimum stops dominating.
  • Leave the Venmo Debit Card at home on foreign trips from November 4, 2026.
