YNAB Pricing 2026: Monthly vs Yearly, the 34-Day Trial and the Real Cost
YNAB costs $109 a year or $14.99 a month in 2026, after a 34-day trial with no card. Three-year costs, sharing with six people and how it compares with Monarch.

YNAB costs $109 a year ($9.08 a month) on the annual plan or $14.99 a month on the monthly plan, plus tax where applicable, after a free 34-day trial that needs no credit card when you sign up directly, as read on YNAB's pricing page on 18 October 2026. There is no free plan, but one subscription covers up to six people.
That makes YNAB a simple price list with one real decision: monthly or yearly. Paying monthly costs $179.88 over twelve months, so the annual plan saves $70.88 a year, which YNAB rounds to a "$70 Savings!" badge. The rest of this page works out what YNAB costs over time, for a household and against the apps budgeters compare it with.
Toolradar data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, tracks 72 personal finance tools as of 17 October 2026, and 60% of them are free, freemium or open source. YNAB sits in the paid minority: it charges from the first day after the trial, which is why the trial and the annual discount matter more here than in most of the category.

| Annual | $9.08 a month | Once a year, up front | $109 | The full app, shared with up to six people |

| College students | $0 | Not billed | $0 for 365 days | A free one-year trial after proof of enrollment |
Prices are in US dollars and exclude tax, from YNAB's pricing page on 18 October 2026. YNAB states that it is priced in US dollars and that exchange rates are not reflected in the price, so a buyer outside the US pays the dollar amount converted by their card issuer.
Monthly or yearly: which YNAB plan is cheaper?
The annual plan is cheaper for anyone who keeps YNAB longer than about seven months. Seven monthly payments cost $104.93, still under the annual price; the eighth takes the monthly total to $119.92, past it. If you are not sure the method will stick, the monthly plan is a fair way to test it after the trial, then switch once you know.
Over a longer horizon the gap compounds:
| Years using YNAB | Annual plan total | Monthly plan total | Extra paid on monthly |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | $218 | $359.76 | $141.76 |
| 3 | $327 | $539.64 | $212.64 |
Totals assume today's list prices hold and exclude tax. Three years on the monthly plan costs about 65% more than three years on the annual plan. A budgeter who knows they will stay should not pay monthly, and a budgeter who might quit should try the 34 days first and then decide.
How YNAB's 34-day free trial works
The trial is longer than most in the category and asks for less. Signing up directly through YNAB requires no credit card, YNAB sends a reminder one week before the trial ends, and on day 34 the trial expires on its own: you are not charged unless you choose a plan and enter a payment method.
The exception is the app stores. YNAB's own fine print says third-party app stores may require credit card information when you start a trial there, which turns a no-risk trial into one that can renew if you forget. Start the trial on YNAB's website, not inside the iPhone or Android store, if you want the version that cannot bill you by accident.
College students get a different deal: a free 365-day trial after submitting proof of enrollment, such as a student ID, transcript or tuition statement. A full year at no cost is long enough to learn the method before the first bill. Existing users of the old YNAB 4 desktop app get a 10% lifetime discount on the annual subscription when they upgrade.
What one YNAB subscription covers
YNAB sells one product at two billing cycles, so the monthly and annual plans include the same features. That includes bank import, goals, debt payoff tools with a loan calculator, and real-time sync across devices. Direct bank import supports select US, Canadian, UK and EU banks, and file-based import covers the rest.
The sharing rule is the part that changes the per-person math. YNAB lets you share one subscription with partners, family and other close groups of up to six people, at no extra charge. On the annual plan that is about $18.17 per person a year for a full household of six, which is less than most single-user budgeting apps charge one person.
The limit worth knowing is currency. You can choose the currency a plan uses, but you cannot mix currencies inside a single spending plan, so a household that budgets in dollars and euros needs separate plans.
YNAB vs Monarch vs EveryDollar on price
YNAB's closest rivals on price are Monarch, the household dashboard, and EveryDollar, the other zero-based budgeting app.
| App and plan | Yearly price | Monthly price | Free option | Trial |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| YNAB | $109 | $14.99 | None | 34 days, no card on YNAB's site |
| Monarch Core | $99.99 | $14.99 | None | 7 days, payment method required |
| Monarch Plus | $199.99 | Not compared here | None | 7 days, payment method required |
| EveryDollar Premium | $79.99 | $17.99 | Free version | 14 days |
Monarch prices come from Monarch's pricing page and EveryDollar prices from EveryDollar's page on Ramsey Solutions, both read on 18 October 2026.
YNAB is not the cheapest annual plan, but it is tied for the cheapest monthly one. Monarch Core undercuts YNAB's yearly price by $9.01 and matches it month to month. EveryDollar Premium is the cheapest yearly plan of the three at $79.99, yet the most expensive month to month, and it keeps a free version for people who enter transactions by hand.
The price difference is small next to the method difference. YNAB asks you to give every dollar a job before you spend it and run the plan each week; Monarch is built around a shared household view and, on Plus, forecasting; EveryDollar follows the Ramsey zero-based approach. Our YNAB vs Monarch comparison goes through the method split, Monarch Money pricing breaks down Core and Plus, and the best budgeting apps ranking covers the wider field.
Toolradar puts the category median entry price at $8.25 a month, among personal finance tools with a verified entry price, in October 2026. YNAB's annual rate sits just above that median and its monthly rate well above it, which is the price of a product with no free tier and a business model YNAB says rests on subscriptions, not on selling user data.

Is YNAB worth the price?
YNAB is worth the annual fee for someone who will run the method: assigning income to categories when it arrives, adjusting when spending changes and checking the plan every week. YNAB says new users save $600 on average in their first month and more than $6,000 in their first year; those are the vendor's own figures, but even a fraction of them covers the subscription many times over.
It is not worth it for someone who wants a passive dashboard. If you prefer to connect accounts and glance at a summary, Monarch's household view or a free tracker fits better, and the 34-day trial is the cheapest way to find out which kind of budgeter you are. Our YNAB review covers the method, its learning curve and its weak spots in more depth, and the Monarch Money review, Rocket Money review and Copilot Money review do the same for the alternatives. For apps built around cancelling subscriptions rather than planning spending, see Rocket Money vs Monarch, and for an AI-first tracker see Monarch vs Copilot Money.
Hidden costs and gotchas
- Tax is extra. Both plan prices are listed "plus tax where applicable", so your card charge can exceed the list price.
- App-store trials can require a card. The no-card trial applies when you sign up directly through YNAB.
- No free plan after the trial. On day 34 you need a paid plan to keep using YNAB.
- The annual plan is paid up front. The $9.08 monthly figure is the yearly charge divided by 12, not a monthly bill.
- Non-US buyers pay in dollars. YNAB prices in US dollars, so currency conversion fees from your bank can apply.
- One currency per plan. Multi-currency households need more than one spending plan.
