Seven US business checking accounts with no default monthly fee, compared on wire and ACH charges, FDIC coverage and the balance tests that trigger a fee.

TL;DR

For a one-owner US company that sends four domestic wires a month, Mercury and Rho are the cheapest free accounts that publish a domestic wire price. Neither charges a monthly fee or a domestic wire or ACH fee on its own vendor page, checked in October 2026. Grasshopper's Innovator account costs $240 a year on the same four wires, and Bluevine Standard costs $720 on those wires, though its 1.3% APY returns part of that.

Novo, Relay and U.S. Bank Business Essentials charge no monthly fee, but their pages do not print a domestic wire amount, so they cannot be priced for this scenario. PNC, Bank of America and Chase each charge a monthly fee that a balance can waive.

Toolradar data: Toolradar tracks 1,092 finance tools, and 29% of them offer a free, freemium or open-source plan, per its October 2026 finance ranking (toolradar.com/best/finance).

Banks are a different market: these accounts charge nothing by default, so the cost sits in the wires and the balance tests. For the software that reads these transactions, see the Xero review.

Pricing read from each vendor's own published pricing page, checked Oct 2026. Every vendor here publishes a price.

Best for: US companies that want free domestic wires and a clean ledger feed

PricingNo monthly fee on checking; Plus is $29.90 a month; domestic ACH and wires are free.

+Domestic ACH, domestic wires and USD international wires are each listed at no charge, so a four-wire month adds nothing on the page's own terms.
+The page states FDIC coverage of up to $5M through partner banks Choice Financial Group and Column N.A., both Members FDIC.
+Plus adds recurring invoices and ACH-debit invoicing at $1 a transaction, which suits a service business that bills by debit.
−The page says Mercury is not an FDIC-insured bank, so coverage depends on which partner bank holds the deposit.
−Non-USD international wires carry a 1% currency exchange fee, and the pricing page does not list cash deposit limits.

Rho

Best for: Finance teams that want bill pay and wires without a per-user fee

+Domestic ACH and domestic wires are free, while a SWIFT international wire costs $15.
+FDIC coverage is stated as $250K per entity on checking, with deposits held at Webster Bank.
−A USD international wire carries a $30 recall fee, and foreign-currency payments add a 1% conversion fee.
−The page does not say how many accounts or users come with checking, so confirm the seat count before you open it.

PricingNo monthly fee; $100 to open; outgoing domestic wires $5 each; ACH free.

+The Innovator account has no monthly maintenance fee and no minimum balance once it is open.

+ACH is free, including unlimited transfers, and incoming domestic wires cost nothing.
−Each outgoing domestic wire costs $5, so a four-wire month adds $240 a year.
−Deposits are FDIC-insured up to $250,000, and the sweep program's coverage of up to $125 million is subject to terms, so plan around the base limit.

Best for: Companies that want yield on checking and can meet a monthly eligibility requirement

PricingStandard: no monthly fee; 1.3% APY in eligible months; domestic wire $15, same-day ACH $10.

+Standard has no monthly fee and five sub-accounts, so bucket budgets can sit in separate accounts.
+The page quotes 1.3% APY on balances up to $250,000, which comes to $130 a year on a $10,000 balance in eligible months.
+FDIC coverage is stated as up to $3M through Coastal Community Bank and program banks.
−A domestic wire costs $15 and same-day ACH costs $10, so the free tier charges for speed.
−The plans page does not spell out the eligibility requirement, and a month that misses it pays no interest.

Best for: Small companies that mostly pay by standard ACH and want no balance test

PricingNo monthly fee and no minimum balance; standard ACH free; wire fee not printed on the page.

+The page states no monthly maintenance fee, no waiver requirement and no minimum balance.
+Standard ACH is free, and an express ACH option carries a fee that the page says is shown before you send.
+Deposits are insured up to $250,000 through partner bank Middlesex Federal Savings, Member FDIC.
−The domestic wire amount is not printed on the page, so a wire-heavy company cannot price the account from it.
−Novo is a fintech rather than a bank, so the $250,000 limit belongs to the partner bank, not to Novo.

Best for: Books that need many separate accounts, one for each project or bucket

PricingNo monthly fee; 20 checking accounts; savings 1.19% APY; ACH and wire fees not listed.

+Starter includes 20 checking accounts per business at no monthly fee, so each bucket can carry its own account number.
+The page quotes 1.19% APY on savings, a variable rate footnoted at 1.18%.
+Deposits can qualify for up to $3,000,000 of FDIC coverage through Thread Bank's sweep at program banks.
−The page says additional transaction fees apply but does not list ACH or domestic wire amounts.
−Relay is a financial technology company, not a bank, and the APY applies to savings rather than the checking account you pay from.
Visit Relay Starter →

Best for: Companies that want a branch bank, unlimited digital transactions and no monthly fee

PricingNo monthly fee; $25 minimum to open; ACH and wire fees are not on the page.

+Business Essentials shows a $0 monthly fee, unlimited digital transactions and free same-day access to funds.
+The plan includes 25 free teller and paper transactions a cycle, then $0.50 each, so branch cash has a visible cost.
+The page names U.S. Bank National Association as the offering bank and states Member FDIC, so the deposit sits with the bank itself.
−Domestic wire and ACH fees are not on the page, and the page sends you to a pricing brochure or a phone line.
−The page gives no interest rate for Business Essentials, so checking earns nothing the page can confirm.

What it is

A free business checking account charges no monthly fee at its entry tier and no balance test to keep it. Fintech accounts such as Mercury, Rho, Novo and Relay hold deposits at partner banks, so FDIC coverage follows the partner bank and its cap.

Chartered banks such as U.S. Bank hold the deposit under their own name.

Methodology: we read the pricing or account page of each vendor. The ranking keeps only accounts whose page lists a $0 monthly fee at the entry tier, and PNC, Bank of America and Chase appear separately as fee traps.

Each fee below is the figure the vendor printed. Where a page does not print an amount, the table says so and that cost is left out of the scenario totals. The vendor pages were checked in October 2026, and no account was opened or tested.

Why it matters

The wire line decides the bill, not the monthly fee. At four domestic outgoing wires a month, or 48 a year, Mercury and Rho cost nothing on their pages, Grasshopper costs $240 a year, and Bluevine Standard costs $720 a year.

Bluevine's 1.3% APY on a $10,000 balance would return $130 a year, and only in months its eligibility test is met, so the net cost is $590 at best.

The balance test is the other trap. PNC's Basic Business Checking charges $12 a month unless one test is met, such as a $500 average balance.

Bank of America's Business Advantage Fundamentals charges $16 a month after its first 12 months unless the account keeps a $5,000 combined average balance. Chase Business Complete charges $15 a month unless one of its tests is met, such as a $2,000 minimum daily ending balance.

On a $10,000 balance all three can waive the fee, but a balance that falls below the test brings the fee back.

Key features to look for

The wire and ACH line
Read the domestic wire and ACH amounts first, since they are where a free account starts to cost money.
The fee waiver
A waiver that needs a balance test fails in the first slow stretch, so price the account as if the waiver were gone.
Who holds the deposit
The partner bank or the chartered bank sets the FDIC limit, so check the bank named on the page before you count coverage.
Interest on checking
Checking yield depends on balance bands or monthly eligibility, and a savings APY is not a checking yield.
Accounts and seats
Relay lists 20 checking accounts and Bluevine lists 5 sub-accounts on the free tier, while Rho's page does not state how many accounts or users come with it.

Pricing

All seven accounts above show no monthly fee at the entry tier. The first paid rung is Mercury Plus at $29.90 a month, as printed.

PNC, Bank of America and Chase charge a fee that a balance can waive, which is why they sit outside the ranking.

Prices were checked on each vendor's own page in October 2026: Mercury pricing, Rho business banking, Grasshopper small business checking, Bluevine plans and pricing, Novo no-fee checking, Relay pricing, U.S.

Bank business checking, PNC Basic Business Checking, Bank of America business checking and Chase Business Complete Banking.

Chase Business Complete Banking$15/mo, waivableWaived by a $2,000 minimum daily ending balance, or by one of four other tests on the page
Mistakes to avoid
×Do not read the monthly fee as the whole cost. Bluevine's domestic wires, at four a month, cost $720 a year, which is more than its $130 of yield on a $10,000 balance.
×A waiver is not permanent. PNC's fee returns once the average falls short of its test, and Chase's returns on any day the ending balance drops below $2,000, so one slow stretch brings the monthly fee straight back.
×Savings yield is not checking yield. Relay's 1.19% APY applies to savings, not to the checking account you pay from, and Mercury's Treasury access starts at a $250K balance.
×The FDIC figure belongs to the partner bank. Mercury's partner-bank figure and Rho's $250K per entity describe different banks and different rules, so read which bank holds the deposit.
Expert tips
→Price the wire first. Four wires a month cost $240 a year at Grasshopper and $720 a year at Bluevine, so the wire count often settles the choice.
→Use separate accounts for separate buckets where the free tier allows. Relay lists 20 checking accounts and Bluevine lists 5 sub-accounts on Standard, so one bank can hold several budgets. For vendor payments, see the <a href="/reviews/bill-review">BILL review</a>.
→Ask for the fee schedule before the first payment. Novo, Relay and U.S. Bank do not print their domestic wire amounts on the pages read for this list.
→If you use a traditional bank, keep the balance clearly above each test. PNC's $500 and Bank of America's $5,000 are averages, but Chase's $2,000 is a daily floor, so one dip breaks it.

The bottom line

Open Mercury when domestic wires are the main cost, since its checking plan lists free domestic ACH and wires. See the Mercury profile on Toolradar for the tool details.

Choose Rho for the same free wires with no per-user fee, and check the account count before you open it.

Choose Grasshopper when checking should earn interest and a few per-wire charges are acceptable.

Choose Bluevine only when the 1.3% APY will be earned every month and $15 wires are rare.

Read the Novo review and the Relay review before you assume a free wire, because neither vendor page prints the domestic wire amount.

For the wider operating-account comparison, use best business bank accounts, and for foreign-currency payments use Wise.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free business checking account in 2026?
For a US company that sends domestic wires, Mercury and Rho are the cheapest free accounts that publish a wire price. On their own vendor pages, neither charges a monthly fee or a domestic wire or ACH fee, checked in October 2026. Grasshopper suits a company that wants interest on checking, and Bluevine Standard suits one that values yield over wire cost.
Is there a business checking account with no monthly fee and no minimum balance?
Yes. Novo's page states no monthly maintenance fee, no waiver requirement and no minimum balance. Rho's page lists no monthly fee, no minimum balance and a free domestic wire, though it does not print how many accounts come with the plan.
How much does a business checking account cost a month?
The seven accounts ranked here show no monthly fee at the entry tier. Mercury Plus is the first paid rung at $29.90 a month as printed. PNC charges $12 a month unless a balance or spend test is met, and Bank of America charges $16 a month after its first 12 months unless one is met. Chase's monthly fee works the same way.
Does Bluevine pay interest on a free business checking account?
Yes. The Standard plan shows 1.3% APY on balances up to $250,000, but only in months the eligibility requirement is met. On a $10,000 balance that is $130 a year, and nine domestic wires at Bluevine's fee would cancel it.
Are these free business accounts FDIC insured?
Coverage belongs to the bank that holds the deposit. Mercury, up to $5M through its partner banks, Relay through Thread Bank up to $3,000,000, Bluevine up to $3M through program banks, Rho $250K per entity at Webster Bank, Novo $250,000 through Middlesex Federal Savings, and Grasshopper $250,000 with a sweep up to $125 million.
What does a free business account still charge?
Wires, international payments and some ACH options. Grasshopper charges a per-wire fee on outgoing domestic wires, Bluevine charges a domestic wire fee and $10 for same-day ACH, and Rho charges $15 for a SWIFT international wire plus 1% on foreign-currency payments.
