HoneyBook Review
What the three HoneyBook plans include, what card and bank fees do to a year of collections, and how Dubsado, Bonsai, Moxie, and 17hats compare.
HoneyBook is worth the yearly Starter plan at $29/mo in 2026 when you sell a project from a proposal and a contract, and you do not need QuickBooks on this subscription. Essentials at $49/mo billed yearly is the first plan with QuickBooks Online and up to two team members. Premium at $109/mo billed yearly is a flat fee for unlimited teammates, so a large studio does not pay per seat.
There is no free plan. The trial is 30 days with no card, and a paid subscription can be refunded for 60 days. Card fees on the pricing page start at 2.9% + $0.25 in the plan grid and at 2.7% + $0.10 in the processing section. Bank transfers are 1.5%. Dubsado, Bonsai, Moxie, and 17hats are the swaps if that fee, or the missing ledger, is the problem.
Key factsBest for: Service businesses that sell a project from a proposal and…
- Proposals, contracts, and invoices on one membership, with QuickBooks held for the middle plan.
- Trial: 30 days, no card
- Refund window: 60 days after you pay
- QuickBooks: Essentials and Premium
- Team members: 2 on Essentials, unlimited on Premium
Pros
- Unlimited clients, proposals, contracts, invoices, and a client portal are on the entry plan, so the sale does not require a higher tier.
- The trial is 30 days with no card, and a paid plan can be refunded in full for 60 days.
- The top plan is one flat membership for unlimited teammates, so a twenty-person studio is not billed per seat.
Cons
- QuickBooks Online, automations, and team logins start on Essentials, so the entry plan cannot feed a bookkeeper's file.
- The pricing page prints two starting card rates, one in the plan grid and one in the processing section, plus a 1.5% bank rate.
- There is no double-entry ledger, and the checking account and loan products have no printed rate.

The membership is the smaller bill. A service business that runs client money through HoneyBook will often pay more in card and bank fees than in the plan, and the cheap plan cannot sync those payments to QuickBooks. Buy Starter for the proposal, the contract, and the invoice. Buy Essentials when a bookkeeper needs the payment in QuickBooks Online, or when a second person needs a login.
Finpresso data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, lists HoneyBook as an alternative to 21 other tools and ranks it #4 of 63 in client portals, as of October 2026. The client portal ranking tracks those 63 tools as of 17 October 2026. The same directory gives HoneyBook 4.6 out of 5 from 938 reviews across G2 and Capterra, last checked 17 September 2026 (G2 4.5 from 250, Capterra 4.7 from 688). See the HoneyBook tool page.
How we compared the set: HoneyBook, Dubsado, Bonsai, Moxie, and 17hats from each vendor's pricing page, read in October 2026. Placement on this page was not sold. We did not run the products, and the order follows the plan gates and the published prices. The wider invoice-fee cut is the freelancer invoicing guide, and a real ledger is the FreshBooks review.
What is HoneyBook?
HoneyBook is client software for creatives, consultants, marketers, and event professionals. The pricing page describes a path from a lead form to a signed file to a payment, with the client portal holding the documents. It is the operating system for selling a project, not the file an accountant closes.
Starter already includes the sale. Unlimited clients and projects, invoices and payments, proposals and contracts, a calendar, templates, a client portal, basic reports, and up to two live lead forms are on that plan, and HoneyBook AI is listed on every plan card. You do not step up a tier to send a contract.
Essentials is the operations tier. It adds a fuller scheduler, automations, QuickBooks Online, up to two team members, up to ten live lead forms, SMS reminders, standard reports, and removal of the Powered by HoneyBook label. Premium is the company tier: unlimited team members, more than one company, advanced reports, unlimited lead forms, and priority support.
The comparison grid also names HoneyBook Balance, a checking account and debit card, and HoneyBook Capital, fixed-fee loans with no interest, pending eligibility. No rate or credit limit is printed. If the close has to live in accounting software, read QuickBooks Online pricing before you treat this subscription as the books.
How HoneyBook works
You start a 30-day trial with no credit card. HoneyBook says you can try virtually every feature, with minor limits on some advanced features, so the trial is wider than the plan you will keep. After you subscribe, a full refund is offered for the first 60 days, and later cancellation has no printed fee.
The daily loop is a file, not a timesheet. A lead form captures the inquiry, a proposal and contract go out for signature, and the invoice collects the money. Once you subscribe, the vendor will turn existing contracts and invoices into templates at no extra charge. Reminders, autopay, and late fees are listed in the payments block.
The rough edge shows up when the work leaves that file. The comparison grid limits the first column to one session with email-only reminders, and gives Essentials and Premium unlimited sessions with email and SMS. QuickBooks sees client payments only after you pay for Essentials.
HoneyBook key features
HoneyBook pricing
Yearly billing is the price on the page when it loads, labeled save up to 18%. Monthly is the other toggle. Starter, Essentials, and Premium were read on HoneyBook pricing in October 2026, alongside Dubsado pricing, Bonsai pricing, Moxie pricing, and 17hats pricing.
Our multiplication of the published monthly rates puts a year of Starter at $348 on yearly billing and $432 if you stay on the monthly toggle, a gap of $84. Essentials is $588 versus $708, a gap of $120. Premium is $1,308 versus $1,548, a gap of $240. Dividing those gaps by the monthly-toggle years gives about 19%, 17%, and 16%. The Starter gap sits a point above the 18% label on the toggle, so budget the dollar gap, not the badge.
A five-person studio cannot stay on Essentials, because that plan lists up to two team members. Five people and twenty people both need Premium, at the yearly figure above, with no extra seat charge. Bonsai prices the same headcount per user. Five Essentials seats, the tier where invoices and contracts appear, are $1,140 for a year at the annual rate. Five Premium seats, the tier with QuickBooks and Xero, are $1,740. Twenty Premium seats are $6,960. HoneyBook's flat top plan is the cheaper membership once the studio is large, and Bonsai is cheaper while the headcount is a handful and each person needs a login.
On $100,000 collected in a year, bank transfer at 1.5% is $1,500 before the membership. The same volume on the plan-grid card math, 2.9% plus 25 cents across 40 payments, is $2,910. The processing-section card math, 2.7% plus 10 cents across those 40 payments, is $2,704. Either card line is several times the yearly Starter membership. Add instant deposit only if you qualify: the page prices it at an extra 1%, and it does not say the fee is included in the card rate.
Essentials plus a year of bank fees on that $100,000 is $2,088. Premium plus the same bank fees is $2,808. The processing section also says there are no international fees and no premium card-brand fees, while still printing two different starting card rates, so checkout is the place to see which card line you were assigned. A volume discount is mentioned for Premium accounts above $500,000 a year, with no discounted percent on the page.
Dubsado prints Starter at $335 a year and Premier at $525 a year, in USD, and says annual billing is worth two months against a monthly plan it does not price. It also prints no card rate. Three additional users are included, then the user bands in the table apply, and a second brand is a separate monthly charge. Public proposals, scheduling, workflows, Zapier, and the bookkeeping link are Premier only.
Moxie marks its cards in USD. Yearly Starter, Pro, and Teams show an annual charge beside the monthly rate, and the Teams annual charge is $1 above twelve times the rate printed on that same card. Teams covers five people and includes QuickBooks because it includes Pro. The page titles a 14-day trial, prints no card or bank rate, and publishes no price past five teammates.
17hats prints one membership in USD at the monthly, yearly, and two-year rates in the table. The two-year badge says save $400, which matches two yearly charges minus the two-year price. Skipping the trial cuts the first year to $300, or the two-year term to $400. Bank connect is $5/mo. Extra users have no printed rate, and payments run through Stripe or Square. A lower grid still shows document caps of 20, 35, and unlimited a month, plus a priced pack of extra documents the buy box never mentions.

HoneyBook pros and cons
What we like
- Unlimited clients, proposals, contracts, invoices, and a client portal are on the entry plan, so the sale does not require a higher tier.
- The trial is 30 days with no card, and a paid plan can be refunded in full for 60 days.
- The top plan is one flat membership for unlimited teammates, so a twenty-person studio is not billed per seat.
What could be better
- QuickBooks Online, automations, and team logins start on Essentials, so the entry plan cannot feed a bookkeeper's file.
- The pricing page prints two starting card rates, one in the plan grid and one in the processing section, plus a 1.5% bank rate.
- There is no double-entry ledger, and the checking account and loan products have no printed rate.
Who HoneyBook is for
HoneyBook fits a studio or solo practice that sells a defined project, wants the contract and the payment schedule in one client file, and will keep the books somewhere else. Photographers, designers, consultants, and planners match the audiences named on the pricing page. Stay on Starter if you are the only login and QuickBooks can wait. Move to Essentials when the bookkeeper wants the sync, or when a second person joins. Move to Premium when a third person joins, or when you run two companies.
Skip it when the only job is an invoice. The Wave review and the FreshBooks pricing breakdown cover cheaper billing tools, and B2B payment platforms cover the fee if the processor is the real decision. Skip it when several people need a seat and a timesheet: Bonsai bills per user and puts time tracking on the cheapest plan. Skip it when you want a ledger with no second subscription. Xero, Zoho Books, and the free accounting roundup are that decision.
Also skip the banking add-ons until HoneyBook prints terms you can underwrite. Balance and Capital are named, not priced. Subscribe free if you want the next fee change in the inbox, and read how we rate for the method behind this page.

The bottom line
Buy yearly Starter if the client file is the product and QuickBooks can wait. Buy Essentials if the bookkeeper needs the sync or a second person needs a login. Buy Premium if a third person, or a second company, is already real. Do not buy any plan expecting a general ledger, and do not model the card fee until you see which of the two starting rates checkout applies.
Choose Dubsado Premier when workflows matter more than a flat team price. Choose Bonsai when each person needs a seat and a timesheet. Choose Moxie when five people is the whole company and the lower yearly charge matters. Choose 17hats when you want one membership and you already accept Stripe or Square. For a ledger, use the FreshBooks review or QuickBooks Online pricing.
