Helcim vs Square (2026): Flat Rate or Interchange Plus?
Helcim vs Square in 2026: interchange-plus margins against Square's flat rates, hardware, ACH, chargebacks and payouts, with break-even rates worked out.

Helcim costs less per card sale for most US businesses; Square costs less to start. Square Free charges a flat 2.6% + 15¢ in person and 3.3% + 30¢ online with no monthly fee. Helcim charges the card network's wholesale cost plus a margin of 0.40% + 8¢ in person and 0.50% + 25¢ online, also with no monthly fee, so it wins whenever that wholesale cost stays below about 2.3% of an in-person sale.
That is the whole decision in one number. Square sells certainty: the same rate on every card, so you know the bill before the month starts. Helcim sells the wholesale price: cheap on debit cards and ordinary credit cards, closer to Square on premium rewards cards, and cheaper again as volume grows.
Every fee here was read on the vendors' own US pages on 21 October 2026: Helcim pricing, Helcim card reader, Square pricing and Square's fee guide. Wholesale examples use Visa's US interchange schedule, effective 18 April 2026. Monthly totals are our arithmetic on those published rates, not a quote from either company.
Toolradar data: Toolradar tracks 191 payment processing tools as of October 2026, and only 32% of them are free, freemium or open source, per its payment processing ranking. Neither Helcim nor Square charges a monthly account fee on its base plan, so the comparison comes down to card rates, hardware and the extras. Product pages: Helcim and Square.
Helcim vs Square at a glance
| Fee (US, read 21 October 2026) | Helcim | Square Free |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly fee | $0, no contract or cancellation fee | $0; Plus $49 and Premium $149 per location |
| In-person card | Interchange + 0.40% + 8¢ (under $50,000 a month) | 2.6% + 15¢ |
| Online or keyed card | Interchange + 0.50% + 25¢ (under $50,000 a month) | 3.3% + 30¢ online; 3.5% + 15¢ keyed or card on file |
| Volume discount | Margin falls to 0.25% + 7¢ in person at $100K to $500K a month | Custom pricing to discuss above $250,000 a year |
| ACH bank payment | 0.5% + 25¢, capped at $6 | 1%, $1 minimum, $10 cap on invoices |
| Recurring billing | Card fee plus 0.4% per transaction | Standard online rate |
| Cheapest card reader | Card Reader, $199 | Square Reader, $59 |
| Payout speed | Next-business-morning deposits, free | Next business day on the standard schedule; instant or same-day 1.95% |
| Chargeback | Free if won, $15 if lost | No fee |
The table splits cleanly. Helcim's margin is a fraction of Square's flat rate on every card type, and its ACH pricing is cheaper too. Square is cheaper on the reader, on lost disputes, and on everything a business pays once.
How do flat-rate and interchange-plus pricing differ?
A flat rate is one price that already includes the card network's wholesale cost. Square charges a café its same in-person rate whether the customer taps a debit card that costs the bank almost nothing or a premium travel card that costs far more. In effect, Square earns more on cheap cards and less on expensive ones, and the merchant cannot see which is which.
Interchange plus separates the two. The wholesale cost, called interchange, goes to the bank that issued the card and is set by Visa and Mastercard; Helcim passes it through at cost, along with the networks' own fees, and adds its margin on top. Helcim says that for most merchants this brings the total in-person effective rate near or below 2%, and keyed and online payments below 2.5%.
Visa's own schedule shows why the card mix matters. A regulated debit card carries 0.05% + 21¢ of interchange in person. A Visa Signature credit card at a retail counter carries 1.65% + 10¢. A Visa Infinite card that meets Visa's spend threshold carries 2.30% + 10¢. On a flat rate you pay the same for all three; on interchange plus your bill follows them.
Which is cheaper for a shop or café counter?
Helcim, for nearly every card mix a counter sees. The scenario: $30,000 a month in person, an average ticket of $50 (600 sales), no refunds or disputes.
| Line | Square Free | Square Plus | Helcim margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Percentage | 2.6% = $780 | 2.5% = $750 | 0.40% = $120 |
| Fixed fee | 15¢ x 600 = $90 | 15¢ x 600 = $90 | 8¢ x 600 = $48 |
| Monthly plan | None | $49 | None |
| Total before wholesale cost | $870 (all in) | $889 (all in) | $168, plus interchange and network fees |
Helcim wins as long as interchange and network fees stay under $702 a month, 2.34% of sales. That figure is $870 minus $168, our arithmetic. Using Visa's rates on the same 600 sales, an all-Signature mix adds $555 of interchange ($723 in total), and an all-regulated-debit mix adds about $141 ($309 in total), both before network fees. Only a counter where nearly every customer pays with a top-tier Visa Infinite card, at $750 of interchange, would cost more on Helcim than on Square Free.
Square Plus does not help here. Its 0.1-point rate cut saves $30 at this volume, less than the monthly plan fee, so a business should buy Plus for its restaurant and retail features, never for processing savings.
For a small-ticket business the fixed fee matters even more. On an $8 sale, Square Free takes about 36¢ and Helcim's margin about 11¢, so the 7¢ gap in fixed fees alone is worth $42 a month on 600 such sales, our arithmetic.
Which is cheaper for an online store?
Helcim again, and by a wider margin, because Square's online rate carries a 30¢ fixed fee. The scenario: $10,000 a month online, an average order of $80 (125 orders).
| Line | Square Free | Square Plus | Helcim margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Percentage | 3.3% = $330 | 2.9% = $290 | 0.50% = $50 |
| Fixed fee | 30¢ x 125 = $37.50 | 30¢ x 125 = $37.50 | 25¢ x 125 = $31.25 |
| Monthly plan | None | $49 | None |
| Total before wholesale cost | $367.50 (all in) | $376.50 (all in) | $81.25, plus interchange and network fees |
The break-even wholesale cost is $286.25 a month, 2.86% of online sales. Visa's card-not-present rate for a Signature card is 2.05% + 10¢, which adds $217.50 here for a Helcim bill of $298.75 before network fees, about $69 under Square Free. Even the Visa Infinite spend-qualified rate of 2.60% + 10¢, the top of that card-not-present tier, keeps Helcim below Square on these orders.
Square's own API rate is 2.9% + 30¢ on every plan, so a developer building a custom checkout pays the same on Free as on Premium. Our Square vs Stripe comparison covers that online-first choice in more depth.
Which is cheaper for invoices, ACH and subscriptions?
Helcim, mostly because of its ACH cap. A $2,000 invoice paid by bank transfer costs $6 at Helcim, since 0.5% + 25¢ would be $10.25 and the cap applies. The same invoice paid by ACH through Square Invoices costs $10, its cap, after 1% would have reached $20.
The cap only bites on larger invoices. On a $300 invoice Helcim charges $1.75 and Square $3, both before any cap, so a freelancer or agency billing in the low hundreds still saves with Helcim, but by dollars, not tens of dollars.
Subscriptions narrow the gap. Helcim adds 0.4% per transaction for automated recurring billing on top of its card fee; Square charges subscription payments at its standard online rate. On a $50 monthly membership, that is 70¢ of Helcim margin and recurring fee before interchange, against $1.95 at Square, our arithmetic.
Hardware, payouts and disputes
Square is cheaper to equip. The Square Reader costs $59, against $199 for the Helcim Card Reader. Helcim's Smart Terminal, a stand-alone device with a printer and 4G, costs $349 outright or $32 a month for 12 months, which is $384 on our arithmetic, so buying it outright saves $35. Both accept Tap to Pay on iPhone without extra hardware, which Helcim lists at no hardware cost.
Payouts are a tie until you need cash the same day. Helcim deposits card and debit sales the next business morning at no charge, and Square's standard schedule also sends funds the next business day; getting money the same day costs 1.95% of the transfer, which on a $3,000 day is $58.50.
Square is kinder on disputes. Square lists no fee for chargebacks and dispute management. Helcim charges nothing when a dispute is resolved in your favor and $15 when you lose it. A shop that loses five disputes a year pays $75 more at Helcim, small against the processing savings above, but real for high-risk categories.
Helcim's other optional charge is 4G data on its hardware at $7 a month, for sellers without Wi-Fi. Wherever the money lands, the account it lands in has its own costs; our business banking fees guide and best business bank accounts cover that side.
Where each one falls short
Helcim's weaknesses. Your monthly bill moves with your customers' cards, so you cannot predict it to the dollar the way you can on Square. Premium rewards cards close most of the gap with Square's flat rate. The $199 reader costs more than three Square Readers. Helcim sells payments first, while Square's pricing page wraps restaurant, retail and appointment software around the same account.
Square's weaknesses. The flat rate overcharges on debit cards and ordinary credit cards, which are most of what a typical counter sees. Online sales on Square Free carry a 30¢ fixed fee, and same-day access to your money costs 1.95%. Paid plans are priced per location, so three stores on Plus pay $147 a month before card fees. Our Square fees breakdown lists every rate by plan.
Verdict by business type
- Pop-up, market stall or first month in business: Square Free. The $59 reader, free POS app and predictable rate matter more than a few dollars of margin at low volume.
- Café, salon or shop taking a few thousand dollars a month or more in person: Helcim. Its in-person margin leaves room for almost any card mix below Square's flat rate, and the savings grow with every sale.
- Online store or service business taking card payments online: Helcim. The break-even wholesale cost is 2.86% of sales, above the Visa card-not-present rates in our scenario.
- Invoicing business paid by ACH: Helcim, thanks to the $6 cap.
- Restaurant needing kitchen displays, kiosks and table service: Square, whose software features are the reason to pay for Plus. Run the card math above before assuming the processing is cheaper.

How we computed it
Every fee comes from the vendors' own US pages, read on 21 October 2026: Helcim pricing, Helcim hardware, Square pricing, Square's fee guide, Square's transfer options and the Square Reader page. Interchange examples come from Visa's US interchange reimbursement fee schedule effective 18 April 2026; Mastercard publishes its own schedule with different rates.
The scenarios multiply each published rate by the stated volume and add the fixed fee per sale. Helcim totals add Visa interchange only; card-network assessment fees, which Helcim also passes through, are not part of Visa's interchange schedule and are excluded, so the break-even figures are the honest comparison point. All scenarios assume US cards, no refunds, list prices and no negotiated rates. Louis Corneloup, founder of Toolradar and Dupple, is the author.
