Cheaper Xero Alternatives in 2026: What a Growing or Established User Saves
Seven US accounting ledgers set against Xero's Growing and Established plans on yearly cost, user seats, bank feeds and the features you lose by moving, with prices read on each vendor's page in October 2026.
Short answer: Zoho Books Standard is the cheapest full replacement for Xero Growing at $15 a month billed yearly, or $180 a year for three users with bank feeds and 1099 e-filing, against $708 a year for Growing at its new $59 monthly price. Wave Pro at $190 a year is the runner-up for a business that mostly needs bank imports and invoicing. Patriot Accounting Basic at $20 a month suits owners who want unlimited users on a plain US ledger.
Established users have the bigger gap. Xero Established now costs $97 a month, and Zoho Books Professional covers multi-currency, projects and five users for $40 a month billed yearly. The one alternative on this list that does not beat Growing for a team is QuickBooks Online: Simple Start is cheaper but has one user, and Essentials costs more than Growing.

- 7 tools compared: Zoho Books, Wave, Patriot Software, Akaunting, ZipBooks, QuickBooks Online, FreshBooks
- Wave (best for: Owner-led service businesses that invoice, import bank transactions and need little beyond that): Pro $190/yr or $19 monthly; Starter free without bank connections or extra users
- Patriot Software (best for: US owners who want unlimited users, bank imports and free 1099 forms on a plain ledger): Accounting Basic $20/mo, Premium $30/mo; 50% off for the first 3 months
- Akaunting (best for: Small teams that bill in more than one currency and want bank feeds for less than Established): Premium Cloud $24/mo billed yearly or $36 monthly, 10 users with bank feeds
Cheaper Xero alternatives matter more this autumn because Xero's US list prices went up, and the 80% discount on its pricing page applies only to a first organization bought by a new customer. A business already on Growing or Established pays the full new rate from its next invoice. This page prices each alternative for the same small US team, so the saving is a dollar figure rather than a feeling.
Finpresso data: when we priced Xero for our Xero review on 25 September 2026, its US page listed Early at $25, Growing at $55 and Established at $90 a month. On 18 October 2026 the same Xero pricing page lists $27, $59 and $97. That is $48 more a year on Growing and $84 more on Established, for the same plan.

Zoho Books
The closest like-for-like swap: Standard covers the Growing workload for $180 a year, and Professional covers most of Established.
- Pricing
- Standard $15/mo billed yearly, 3 users; free plan for businesses under $50K revenue
Best for: Growing users who want bank feeds, 1099 e-filing and an accountant seat for a third of the price
Pros
- Standard includes 3 users, bank feeds, sales and use tax tracking and e-filing of 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC forms.
- Professional adds multi-currency, project profitability, timesheets and inventory with 5 users, which makes it the closest match to Established on this page.
Cons
- Seats are capped by plan, and each extra user costs $3 a month, or $2.50 billed yearly, where Xero charges nothing per user.
- Standard allows up to 5,000 invoices a year, and budgets plus cash flow forecasting wait until Premium at $60 a month billed yearly.
Wave
The lowest paid bill on this page: Pro adds automatic bank imports, receipt capture and extra users for less than a third of Growing.
- Pricing
- Pro $190/yr or $19 monthly; Starter free without bank connections or extra users
Best for: Owner-led service businesses that invoice, import bank transactions and need little beyond that
Pros
- Pro auto-imports, merges and categorizes bank transactions and captures unlimited receipts.
- Pro waives the $0.60 per card transaction on the first 10 card payments each month, leaving 2.9%.
Cons
- Starter is free but has no automatic bank connections and no extra user accounts, so a Xero switcher needs Pro.
- The pricing page lists no multi-currency, project or budgeting features, so it does not replace Established.
Patriot Software
A plain US ledger with unlimited users and bank imports on its cheapest plan, and payroll sold by the same vendor.
- Pricing
- Accounting Basic $20/mo, Premium $30/mo; 50% off for the first 3 months
Best for: US owners who want unlimited users, bank imports and free 1099 forms on a plain ledger
Pros
- Basic includes unlimited customers and invoices, automatic bank imports and account reconciliation.
- Patriot says it does not charge extra to create and track 1099s and 1096s, and its page says you can add unlimited users.
Cons
- Estimates, recurring invoices and user permissions are on Premium, so a team that needs roles pays $30 a month.
- Basic Payroll customers pay a nominal 1099 e-filing fee that the pricing page does not print.
Akaunting
An open-source ledger whose Premium Cloud plan bundles 10 users, bank feeds and multiple currencies.
- Pricing
- Premium Cloud $24/mo billed yearly or $36 monthly, 10 users with bank feeds
Best for: Small teams that bill in more than one currency and want bank feeds for less than Established
Pros
- Every cloud plan lists multiple currencies, a feature Xero keeps for Established.
- Premium Cloud covers 10 users and 10 companies, so a bookkeeper with several entities pays once.
Cons
- Standard Cloud is cheaper but has no bank feeds and only 1 user plus 1 accountant.
- The pricing page does not mention 1099 forms or US sales tax filing, so check both before you move a US business.
ZipBooks
Unlimited invoices on every plan and unlimited users on Sophisticated, with time tracking from Smarter up.
- Pricing
- Smarter $15/mo with 5 team members; Sophisticated $35/mo with unlimited users
Best for: Service firms that bill time and want unlimited users without per-seat fees
Pros
- Smarter adds 5 team members, multiple bank connections, recurring invoices with auto-bill and time tracking.
- Sophisticated invites unlimited users and adds smart tagging, account reconciliation and books locking.
Cons
- Reconciliation and closed-period locking are listed on Sophisticated, so a Xero user who reconciles monthly needs that plan.
- Its feature list records 1099 payments and tracks 1099 vendors but does not say it files the forms, so plan a separate e-filing step.
QuickBooks Online
Cheaper than Growing only for one user: Simple Start costs $456 a year, and Essentials costs more than Xero.
- Pricing
- Simple Start $38/mo with 1 user plus 2 accountants; 50% off for 3 months
Best for: Solo owners who work with an outside accountant and want the ledger most US accountants know
Pros
- Simple Start gives access to 2 accountants on top of the one user, enough for a solo owner and an outside firm.
- Bill pay by standard ACH is included free within the monthly allotment, then $0.50 per payment.
Cons
- Essentials, the first plan with 3 users, lists at $85 a month, above Xero Growing for the same team.
- Project profitability and inventory are on Plus at $140 a month, so it is no cheaper exit from Established.
FreshBooks
Cheaper than Growing for a solo owner with a short client list, but every added team member costs extra.
- Pricing
- Lite $23/mo for 5 billable clients; Plus $43/mo for 50; extra team members $11/mo each
Best for: Freelancers and consultants with few clients who mostly need invoicing and expense tracking
Pros
- Lite is $276 a year for a solo owner, under half the Growing bill.
- The 80% intro discount runs for 4 months, one month longer than Xero's 3-month offer.
Cons
- Plans cap billable clients at 5 on Lite and 50 on Plus, a limit Xero does not set on Growing.
- Two team members add $22 a month, so a three-person team on Lite pays $540 a year.
What it is
A cheaper Xero alternative is double-entry accounting software that covers what most Xero subscribers use (invoicing, bills, bank feeds, reconciliation, 1099s and reports) for a lower yearly bill. The real comparison is plan to plan: Growing is the plan most small teams sit on, because Early caps you at 20 invoices and 5 bills.
Xero's strongest pricing feature is that it charges no per-user license fee. Several alternatives here cap seats by plan or bill extra users, so the cheapest sticker price is not always the cheapest bill once your bookkeeper and outside accountant log in.
Why it matters
The scenario we priced is a three-person US team: the owner, a part-time bookkeeper and an outside accountant, sending more than 20 invoices a month, with two bank accounts on automatic feeds and contractors who need 1099s. That workload already rules out Xero Early, so Growing is the baseline at $708 a year.
Moving also has a switching cost that no pricing page shows. You rebuild bank rules, re-link the feeds, re-create recurring invoices and reconnect apps. If the saving is under $250 a year, the hours spent migrating may cost more than the price gap, so the ranking below favors the alternatives with the widest margin that still cover the workload.
Key features to look for
Pricing
Every price on this page was read on the vendor's own pricing page on 18 October 2026: Xero, Zoho Books, Wave, Patriot Software, Akaunting, ZipBooks, QuickBooks Online and FreshBooks. The earlier Xero prices come from our own reading of the same Xero page on 25 September 2026.
The takeaway: for a three-person team, four alternatives cost under half of Growing. Zoho Books Standard billed yearly saves $528 a year, Wave Pro saves $518, Patriot Basic saves $468 and Akaunting Premium billed yearly saves $420. QuickBooks Simple Start saves $252 a year, but only if one person keeps the books.
For an Established user the comparison is Zoho Books Professional billed yearly at $480 a year against $1,164 for Established, a gap of $684. Xero's own downgrade path is Early at $27 a month, which only works under 20 invoices and 5 bills a month.
Methodology: each yearly figure is the plan's printed monthly price times 12, or the printed annual price where the vendor sells one, for the three-person scenario above. Promotional prices are left out of the yearly totals because they run 3 or 4 months and then revert. We ranked the seven tools by how much of the Growing workload they cover and how much they save, and we read pricing pages only: no software was installed or run for this page.
| Plan | Price | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Xero Growing (baseline) | $59/mo | Unlimited invoices and bills, no per-user fee, 60-day cash flow forecast; 3 budgets |
| Xero Established | $97/mo | Adds multiple currencies, project time and costs, expense claims and a 180-day forecast |
| Xero Early | $27/mo | Capped at 20 invoices and 5 bills; auto-reconcile is a $5/mo add-on |
| Zoho Books Standard | $15/mo billed yearly, $20 monthly | 3 users, bank feeds, 1099 e-filing, up to 5,000 invoices a year |
| Zoho Books Professional | $40/mo billed yearly, $50 monthly | 5 users, multi-currency, project profitability, timesheets and inventory |
| Wave Pro | $190/yr or $19/mo | Automatic bank imports, unlimited receipt capture, extra users |
| Patriot Accounting Basic | $20/mo | Unlimited invoices, automatic bank imports, reconciliation |
| Patriot Accounting Premium | $30/mo | Adds estimates, recurring invoices and user-based permissions |
| Akaunting Premium Cloud | $24/mo billed yearly, $36 monthly | 10 users, 10 companies, bank feeds and multiple currencies |
| ZipBooks Sophisticated | $35/mo | Unlimited users, reconciliation, smart tagging and books locking |
| QuickBooks Online Simple Start | $38/mo | 1 user plus access for 2 accountants; free ACH bill pay within the allotment |
| FreshBooks Lite | $23/mo | 5 billable clients; each extra team member is billed per month |
The bottom line
Choose Zoho Books Standard if you are on Xero Growing with a small team: it covers bank feeds, 1099 e-filing and three users for the lowest yearly bill on this page. Choose Wave Pro if you are an owner who mostly invoices and imports bank transactions. Choose Patriot or ZipBooks Sophisticated if you want unlimited users without a per-seat charge. If you are on Established, Zoho Books Professional is the cheapest plan here that lists both multi-currency transactions and project profitability.
Stay on Xero if your accountant runs your books in Xero, if you depend on apps that only connect to Xero, or if your volume fits Early. Toolradar, the software directory we run, lists 279 accounting tools as of 18 October 2026, and keeps profiles for Xero, Zoho Books and Wave.
