TL;DR

Melio is worth it for a small team that pays most bills from a bank account, and costly once you pay by card or need an overnight check. The Go plan costs $0 for one user and includes 5 free ACH payments a month. Core costs $20 a month billed annually for one user, plus $8 for each extra user, while BILL's Essentials plan costs $49 per user. The fees to watch are 1% on instant and same-day bank transfers (capped at $75), $50 for an overnight check and 2.9% for a card payment. Figures read on Melio's pricing page on 10 October 2026.

BILL Essentials, per user$49 a month

Melio's plan price is low, so its payment fees decide what a month of bills really costs. A team that pays under 20 bills a month by ACH on Core pays nothing extra for those payments.

One overnight check costs $50, the same as 100 ACH payments past the allowance, so the route matters more than the plan.

We read Melio's pricing page, its fee table and its FAQ on 10 October 2026, then set it against BILL, Ramp, Relay and Tipalti, the four alternatives small finance teams usually compare it with.

Melio's seat fee is most directly comparable to BILL's per-user pricing, and most of this review turns on that gap.

Toolradar data: Melio's Toolradar profile shows pricing checked on 1 October 2026, starting at $25 a month with a free plan, and the Best Payment Processing Tools list there holds 186 tools.

What is Melio?

Melio is a bill payment and invoicing account for small businesses. It pays vendors and contractors by ACH, wire, paper check or card, captures bills from email into a dedicated inbox, and sends invoices with payment links on every plan.

It syncs with QuickBooks Online and Xero on the paid tiers, adds QuickBooks Desktop on Boost and NetSuite on Unlimited, and handles W-9 and 1099 tasks for contractors from Core.

Melio's own about page links press coverage dated 15 October 2025 that reports Xero completing its acquisition of Melio. The pricing page also lists a six-month free Xero subscription on every plan.

How Melio works

A Melio payment has two cost lines: the plan fee and the fee for the payment route. The route is set by how the bill is paid. A standard ACH payment from a bank account costs $0.50 once the plan's free allowance runs out, and a standard paper check costs $1.50.

The faster routes cost more. An instant bank transfer or a same-day ACH costs 1% of the payment, subject to a cap, and an overnight check costs $50.

Paying a vendor by card starts at 2.9%, and the faster card routes add flat amounts on top, such as a flat fee for a fast check.

On a $2,000 bill that is $58 by card, against 1% for an instant transfer and nothing for an ACH payment inside the allowance. Cards make sense only when a vendor refuses ACH, so treat them as the exception.

Melio key features

Free ACH allowanceEssential
Go includes 5 free ACH payments a month, Core 20, Boost 50 and Unlimited an unlimited number. Each payment past the allowance carries a per-payment fee, so a team that pays fewer than 20 bills a month on Core pays no ACH fees.
Approvals and batch payments
Batch payments and custom approval workflows start on Core, with vendor-based and gradual approvals. Go has AI bill capture and a dedicated bills inbox, so a solo owner gets bill intake without approvals.
W-9 and 1099 handling
Core adds W-9 collection with TIN validation and 1099 automation through Tax1099 e-filing. Contractor-heavy teams get the tax paperwork inside the same account rather than in a separate tool.
Card and international payments
Any bill can be paid by card, even where the vendor does not accept cards, and international payments go out in USD. The international card route costs 2.9% plus a flat fee in USD, so it is a fallback, not a default.

Melio pricing

Melio's pricing page lists four self-serve plans in US dollars and one quote-only tier. Go is free forever for one user. Core, Boost and Unlimited each start with 90 days at no charge, then bill at $25, $55 and $80 a month, or at the lower annual rates in the table.

Core and Boost charge $10 a month for each extra user on monthly billing and $8 on annual billing. Unlimited covers unlimited users.

The fee table sets the cost per payment.

From a bank account, a standard ACH payment costs $0.50 once the plan's free allowance is used, a paper check $1.50, flat fees apply to fast and overnight checks, a wire $10, and an instant bank transfer or same-day ACH 1%, both with caps.

Paying by card starts at 2.9%. International ACH payments in USD carry a flat fee, and the fast USD route costs 1%, with a floor and a ceiling.

The gotcha sits in the trial. The FAQ says that a team which stays on Go after its 90-day trial loses access to premium features, and any data created with them is deleted.

Move any data you need before the trial ends.

Methodology: Melio figures come from its pricing page and its about page, read on 10 October 2026.

BILL figures come from its pricing page, Ramp figures from its pricing page, Relay figures from its pricing page and Tipalti figures from its pricing page, read the same day.

We have not run payments through any of these accounts. The scenarios use only those published figures, and assume every bill is paid by ACH unless we say otherwise.

Who Melio is for

Melio fits a small team that pays most bills by ACH and wants QuickBooks or Xero sync without a high seat fee. Five people paying 40 bills a month by ACH on Core, billed annually, pay $52 a month for seats plus $10 in ACH fees above the 20 free payments, or $62 a month in total.

The same five users on BILL Essentials pay $245 a month for seats and $23.60 for 40 ACH payments at $0.59 each, or $268.60 a month.

Unlimited costs $64 a month billed annually with unlimited users and free ACH, so once a team reaches seven users it costs less than Core on annual billing before ACH fees.

Skip Melio if most of your bills go by card or overnight check.

A card payment at 2.9% on a $2,000 bill costs $58, and an overnight check costs $50 whatever the amount. Skip it too if you need approval rules deeper than its tiers, or the vendor reach of BILL's network of more than 4 million vendors.

Ramp and Relay suit teams that want banking or a corporate card in the same account, and Tipalti suits a company paying suppliers across many countries.

The bottom line

Melio is worth it when most of your bills go by ACH and the seat fee matters, and a poor pick when you pay by card or overnight check. On Core billed annually, a five-person team paying 40 ACH bills a month spends $62 a month, against $268.60 on BILL Essentials.

From seven users, Unlimited at $64 a month billed annually costs less than Core, before ACH fees.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Melio cost?

Melio's Go plan is free forever for one user and includes 5 free ACH payments a month. Core starts at $25 a month, or less billed annually, after 90 days at no charge. Payment fees apply on top: a fee per ACH payment after the allowance, 1% for an instant or same-day bank transfer, and from 2.9% by card. Melio's pricing page was read on 10 October 2026.

Is there a free Melio plan?

Yes. Go is free for one user with no monthly subscription, and it still pays bills by ACH, wire, check or card. Paid plans begin with a 90-day trial. Melio's FAQ says a team that stays on Go afterwards loses premium features, and the data created with them is deleted.

How much does Melio charge for a check?

A standard paper check costs $1.50 from a bank account, and an overnight check costs $50, with a faster flat-fee option in between. BILL charges $1.99 for a check it mails and $24.99 for an overnight check, so Melio is cheaper on a standard check and BILL on overnight delivery.

Is Melio owned by Xero?

Melio's own about page links press coverage dated 15 October 2025 that reports Xero completed its acquisition of Melio. The pricing page lists a six-month free Xero subscription on every plan, and Xero sync is part of Core, Boost and Unlimited.

Is Melio cheaper than BILL for a small team?

For five users paying 40 bills a month by ACH, Melio Core billed annually costs $62 a month and BILL Essentials costs $268.60. On ACH the per-payment fees are close, $0.50 for Melio after its allowance and $0.59 for BILL, so the gap is the seat fee. BILL's approval and sync depth can still justify that cost for larger finance teams.
