Quicken vs QuickBooks (2026): Which One Does a Small Business Need?
Quicken vs QuickBooks in 2026: Quicken Business & Personal lists at $8.99/mo billed annually, QuickBooks Online Simple Start at $38/mo. Which one your books need.

Quicken is household money software with a business view bolted on; QuickBooks is business accounting. A freelancer or landlord who mostly needs Schedule C, E or F totals plus a budget and a portfolio is better served by Quicken Business & Personal at $8.99/mo, billed annually on list. A company with employees, vendor bills, an outside accountant or inventory needs QuickBooks Online, which starts at $38/mo on Simple Start.
The names are close, but these are separate products from separate companies: Quicken is sold by Quicken Inc., QuickBooks by Intuit. Toolradar data: among the 280 accounting tools Toolradar evaluated as of October 2026, QuickBooks is listed as an alternative to 98 other tools, second only to Odoo. Quicken sits in a different shelf: it is the fourth most-listed alternative among the 63 personal finance tools Toolradar compares. Directory pages: Quicken and QuickBooks.

The yearly Quicken figures are the totals Quicken's checkout shows for a new subscription, before tax. QuickBooks bills by the month, so its yearly cost is our arithmetic further down.
Quicken tracks a household; QuickBooks keeps a company's books
The real split is who the ledger belongs to. Quicken's comparison page lists budgets, savings goals, bill tracking, 401(k) and IRA accounts, 529s, crypto, net worth over time, a retirement planner and Zillow home values. Those are personal finance features, and the business tools sit beside them: Business & Personal adds business cash flow, invoices, A/P and A/R tracking, a P&L and built-in Schedules C, E and F.
QuickBooks starts from the other end. Every paid Online plan counts users and accountant logins, the cheapest paid plan already includes accountant access for two firms, and the upper plans add inventory, projects, classes, locations and approval workflows. Nothing on Intuit's pricing page is about a mortgage, a 529 or a retirement plan, because the product is a company's general ledger.
That difference decides most purchases before price does. A sole proprietor whose tax return is the main output wants categories mapped to IRS lines, and Quicken builds the Schedule C, E or F view in. A business whose output is financial statements for a lender, payroll, sales tax and a year-end file for a CPA wants QuickBooks, because the accountant will work in it directly.
How much does each one cost for a year?
Compare like with like: Quicken is billed once a year, QuickBooks Online month to month. On list prices, our arithmetic gives these 12-month costs, before tax:
| Setup | 12-month cost on list prices |
|---|---|
| Quicken Business & Personal | $107.88 |
| Quicken Classic Business & Personal | $149.88 |
| QuickBooks Simple Start, 12 monthly bills | $456 |
| QuickBooks Essentials, 12 monthly bills | $1,020 |
| QuickBooks Plus, 12 monthly bills | $1,680 |
| Quicken Simplifi plus QuickBooks Simple Start | $539.88 |
The gap between Quicken Business & Personal and Simple Start is $348.12 a year. That is the price of moving from a tax-ready household tool to a real business ledger with accountant access, and for a one-person consulting practice that files a Schedule C, it is often money the books do not need yet.
The last row is the common answer for an owner who has outgrown Quicken for the business but still wants the household budget and portfolio view: keep Simplifi for personal money and run the company in QuickBooks. It costs about five times Business & Personal, so do it when the company has a reason, such as a first employee or a CPA who asks for a QuickBooks file.
QuickBooks Free changes the math only for very early businesses. Intuit's free plan is $0 with no credit card, but it allows one user, two invoices and one estimate a month, and one connected bank account, and Intuit says mobile app access and third-party integrations are not available on it. Our Is QuickBooks free? page covers where that plan runs out.
Offers that change the first year
Both vendors advertise a cheaper start, and neither is the price to budget for year two.
Quicken prints a first-year offer for new memberships ordered directly by 13 November 2026: Simplifi at $3.99/mo, Business & Personal at $4.99/mo, Classic Premier at $7.99/mo and Classic Business & Personal at $10.99/mo, each billed annually. On Business & Personal that is $59.88 for the first year, our arithmetic. Quicken's terms say the membership then renews every year at the then-current price unless you cancel before the renewal date.
QuickBooks Online prints 50% off for three months on every paid Online plan, so Simple Start is $19/mo for the first three months. A first year on Simple Start then comes to $399 (three discounted months, then nine months at list, our arithmetic). Intuit also offers a 30-day free trial, and its pricing page lists no annual contract, so you can cancel any month.
The practical difference: Quicken asks for a year up front and renews for a year, while QuickBooks can be dropped after one bad month. A side business that may not survive the year carries less risk on QuickBooks month to month, even though Quicken's year is far cheaper.
Where Quicken stops being enough
Quicken Business & Personal covers more business than its price suggests. Quicken's product page says it sends automated, trackable invoices to unlimited clients, takes online payments, stores receipts, lets you grant your accountant or advisor access, and manages up to 10 businesses at no extra cost. For a landlord with three rentals or a designer with a dozen clients, that is a complete toolkit.
The limits show up when the business stops being one person's tax return:
- Staff. QuickBooks counts users per plan (1, 3, 5 and 25 on the four paid Online plans) and sells payroll as a separate Intuit subscription. Our QuickBooks payroll pricing page prices that add-on.
- Vendor bills and approvals. QuickBooks pays bills by ACH from the ledger, free up to a monthly allotment and $0.50 per standard ACH transaction after it, and Advanced adds approval workflows and 1099 e-filing through Bill Pay Elite.
- Stock and job costing. Inventory, project profitability and up to 40 classes and locations start on Plus.
- The accountant's workflow. Simple Start through Plus include two accountant logins and Advanced includes three, inside the plan, so the preparer works in the live file rather than in an export.
- Platform. Quicken's own FAQ says its products are built for the US and Canada and support banks from those two countries only.
Quicken Classic adds a second consideration. Classic Deluxe, Premier and Classic Business & Personal run on Windows and Mac with companion web and mobile apps, and cloud storage there is an add-on at $1.99/mo. If you want the business books in a browser from day one, Business & Personal or QuickBooks Online fits better than the desktop line.
Where QuickBooks is more than you need
QuickBooks is the heavier tool, and a solo owner pays for features that sit idle. Simple Start buys one user, a chart of accounts, automated bank feeds and reports built for a company; it does not track your IRA, plan a household budget or show a net worth. If half your money questions are personal, QuickBooks answers only the business half.
The plan ladder also climbs fast. A sixth person who posts transactions moves you from Plus to Advanced, a jump from $140 to $340 a month. Our QuickBooks Online pricing breakdown walks through those caps, and the QuickBooks Desktop vs Online comparison covers the desktop route.
Intuit sells a smaller line for one-person businesses, QuickBooks Solopreneur, which our QuickBooks Solopreneur review prices plan by plan. Owners still on the older product can read the QuickBooks Self-Employed review. If cost is the main objection, cheaper QuickBooks alternatives and QuickBooks vs Wave list ledgers with lower stickers.
Which one should you buy?
Buy Quicken Business & Personal if you are self-employed or own rentals, you file the business on your personal return, nobody else posts in the books, and you also want budgets, savings goals and investment tracking in the same app. At its yearly list price, it is the cheapest way here to get Schedule C, E and F totals and invoices.
Buy Quicken Classic Premier or Classic Business & Personal if you want the desktop line's investment tools, which Quicken's comparison lists as performance tracking, Morningstar fund ratings and a capital gains estimator, on Windows or Mac. The full single-product write-up is our Quicken review.
Buy QuickBooks Online Simple Start once the business needs a ledger an accountant can open, vendor bills paid from the books, or statements for a lender. Move to Essentials for a second or third user, and to Plus for inventory or project margins.
Run both when the company is real and the household is complex: Simplifi for personal money and QuickBooks for the business keeps the two sets of books apart instead of mixing household and company money in one file. If you only want a household budget, our YNAB vs Monarch comparison and Simplifi review cover that shelf.
How we compared
We read Quicken's plan comparison, Quicken's Classic comparison, the Business & Personal product page and the yearly totals on Quicken's own checkout, plus Intuit's QuickBooks Online pricing page and the QuickBooks Free page, on 21 October 2026. Yearly totals for QuickBooks and every combined figure are our arithmetic on those printed prices, before sales tax. The 280-tool count and the alternatives figures are Toolradar data as of October 2026.
Finpresso data: the Beehiiv export refreshed November 1, 2026 shows 31,000+ active subscribers on this list, with an average open rate of 33%. Louis Corneloup, founder of Toolradar and Dupple, edited this page. Prices change, and both vendors run promotions often, so recheck the live pricing pages before you subscribe.
This page is general information, not personalized financial advice. Confirm current prices, renewal terms and plan limits with Quicken or Intuit before you buy, and ask your tax preparer which records they need.
FAQ
Is Quicken or QuickBooks better for a small business in 2026?
QuickBooks Online is better for a business with employees, vendor bills, inventory or an outside accountant, and Simple Start is the entry paid plan. Quicken Business & Personal fits a self-employed owner or landlord who files business income on a personal return and wants a household budget in the same annual subscription. The deciding question is whether the books exist for a tax return or for a company.
How much does Quicken cost compared with QuickBooks?
On 21 October 2026, Quicken's checkout showed $83.88 a year for Simplifi, $107.88 for Business & Personal and $149.88 for Classic Business & Personal, all billed annually. QuickBooks Online listed $38, $85, $140 and $340 a month for its four paid plans, billed monthly, plus a $0 Free plan with two invoices a month. Twelve months of Simple Start is $456 on list, our arithmetic.
Can Quicken replace QuickBooks for a sole proprietor?
Often, yes. Quicken Business & Personal sends invoices to unlimited clients, tracks business cash flow and P&L, builds Schedules C, E and F, and handles up to 10 businesses. It stops fitting when someone else needs to post in the books, when payroll starts, or when your accountant wants a QuickBooks file rather than a report.
Can I track personal finances in QuickBooks?
QuickBooks Online is built as a company ledger: its plans are priced on business users and accountant access, and its features are invoices, bills, inventory and company reports. Intuit's pricing page lists no household budgeting, retirement planning or personal investment tracking. Owners who want both usually pair a personal app such as Quicken Simplifi, $83.88 a year on list, with QuickBooks for the business.
Do Quicken and QuickBooks offer a discount or free trial?
Quicken offers a first-year price for new memberships ordered directly by 13 November 2026, including Business & Personal at $4.99/mo billed annually, then renews at the then-current price. QuickBooks Online offers 50% off for three months on its paid plans, or a 30-day free trial, and has a permanent $0 Free plan with tight limits.
Are Quicken and QuickBooks made by the same company?
No. QuickBooks is an Intuit product, while Quicken is sold by Quicken Inc. under its own pricing and checkout. The names overlap, but the accounts, data files and subscriptions are separate, so buying one does not give you the other.
