Best US Business Bank Accounts for Non-Residents in 2026

Seven options compared on who can open them from abroad, the documents and address each one asks for, monthly fees, and wire and FX costs.

TL;DR

Mercury is the default for a founder living abroad who already has a US LLC and an EIN. Checking has no monthly fee, domestic ACH and wires are free, and a passport works as the owner's ID. Wise Business fits better when you send and receive in several currencies, and Relay fits when you need many checking accounts and can give each owner a physical US address.

doola is not a bank. Start there only if you still need the LLC, because most accounts on this list need a US-formed company first. Rho's help center asks for a US operating address or a US-based owner, and Airwallex charges $15 to $25 per SWIFT transfer.

The best business bank account for a founder who lives outside the US is the one that will open for that founder at all, and then costs the least to run. Most banks ask for a US-formed company, an EIN and a government ID for each controlling owner, and several add an address rule that non-residents struggle to meet.

Toolradar data: Toolradar, the directory we run, tracks 1,097 finance tools (subcategories included) as of October 12, 2026.

This page covers seven options for one buyer, not the whole category (see the Toolradar finance ranking).

How we compared: prices were checked on each vendor's own pricing page in October 2026, in USD, and eligibility rules come from the vendor's own help pages, FAQs and blog posts.

Items rank on whether a founder abroad can open the account, the monthly cost at the entry plan, and what international wires and FX cost. Disclosure: the doola link is an affiliate link, and Finpresso earns a commission if you sign up.

Checking free, no monthly fee; Plus from $35/mo ($29.90 billed annually); free domestic ACH and wires

  • Treasury pays up to 4.00% once balances reach $250K, and it is a separate product from checking.

Cons

  • Non-USD wires carry a 1% exchange fee and non-USD card spending carries 3%, so pay in USD where you can.
  • A company formed outside the US cannot use the international wire features, and founders or controllers living in listed countries cannot open an account.
2 Relay logo

Relay

Free Starter with 20 checking accounts, but each beneficial owner needs a physical US address.

  • Scale includes 50 checking accounts per business and no fee on same-day ACH.
  • Thread Bank's sweep program can reach up to $3,000,000 of FDIC coverage across program banks.

Cons

  • Each beneficial owner needs a physical US address with no PO box or virtual mailbox, plus a separate operating address if a registered agent's address is the legal one.
  • The 1.19% to 3.21% APY applies to savings, not checking, and Relay is not an FDIC-insured bank itself.

  • Wise is not an FDIC-insured bank, but interest-earning funds get pass-through FDIC cover up to $250,000 through program banks.

Cons

  • Wise needs a physical trading address: PO boxes, registration agencies, mail forwarding and virtual addresses are refused.
  • Wise does not onboard businesses from Nevada or the US territories.

  • Airwallex's February 2026 guide says international founders can verify with a passport, and in some cases non-residents can use an ITIN in place of an SSN.
  • Explore includes free batch transfers to 120+ countries, and Grow adds customizable approvals and an AI expense policy agent.
  • Airwallex US, LLC is registered as a money service business with FinCEN, and it partners with Evolve Bank & Trust for some US customers.

Cons

  • Airwallex's own guide says online banks will not open a checking account on an EIN alone, so expect to supply formation papers and ID as well.
  • Grow adds a platform fee to the per-user price, and FX and transfer fees apply on every plan.
5 Rho logo

Rho

Free domestic transfers and checking, but the company needs a US operating address or a US-based SSN owner.

Pricing
Checking has no monthly, per-user or minimum-balance fee; domestic ACH, wires and checks free; SWIFT fee applies

Best for: Owners who have a US operating address and want checking with no monthly fee

Pros

  • Checking deposits are FDIC-insured up to $250,000 per entity at Webster Bank, according to Rho's product page updated October 9, 2026.
  • Native sync with QuickBooks Online, NetSuite, Sage Intacct and Puzzle, with bank feeds for Xero.
  • Rho describes live human support 24/7, and checking has no per-user fee as the team grows.

Cons

  • Its help center requires US incorporation plus either a US operating address or one owner based in the US with an SSN, which a founder abroad may not meet.
  • International payments cost more: a SWIFT fee, a 1% conversion on foreign currency and a $30 recall fee on USD international wires.
6 Payoneer logo

Payoneer

A payments account rather than checking: local receiving is free, but eligibility needs confirming first.

Pricing
No monthly subscription; $29.95 annual fee only if under $6,000 is received in 12 months

Best for: Founders who collect client payments in several currencies and do not need a checking account

Pros

  • Receiving into a local-currency account costs nothing, and the annual account fee applies only to low-volume accounts.
  • Withdrawals to a US bank cost 1%.
  • The exact fee for a payment is shown before you confirm it, according to Payoneer's pricing page.

Cons

  • Payoneer does not state whether a non-resident owner of a US LLC qualifies, so ask support in writing before you form the company.
  • Sending from a Payoneer balance to another country costs up to 1% plus up to $4.00, and non-local receiving costs 1%.
7 doola logo

doola

Not a bank. A formation plan that files the LLC and EIN, and its FAQ says a passport is needed for the bank step.

Pricing
Starter $297/yr plus state fees: LLC or C corp, EIN, registered agent and US business address

Best for: Founders living abroad who still need the LLC and EIN before any bank will open

Pros

  • Starter includes formation filings, the EIN, an operating agreement, a registered agent and a virtual mailing address.
  • doola's FAQ says no citizenship is needed and no documents are required to start, only a company name, a personal address, a phone number and an email.
  • Tax and Compliance adds IRS business tax filings, the annual state report and a tax consultation for $1,999 a year plus state fees.

Cons

  • The Starter plan has no tax filings, and state fees are charged on top and vary by state.
  • It gives you no account: you still apply to a bank, which asks for the EIN letter and a passport or government ID.

What it is

A non-resident business bank account is a checking account in the name of a US LLC whose owner lives abroad.

The bank needs a US-formed company, an EIN and an ID for each controlling owner, plus an address it accepts.

Mercury and Relay hold deposits through partner banks, so FDIC cover depends on the partner bank behind each product.

Airwallex operates through Airwallex US, LLC, registered as a money service business with FinCEN, and partners with Evolve Bank & Trust for some US customers.

The IRS says an applicant whose principal place of business is outside the US must apply for the EIN by phone, fax or mail, not through the online form.

Why it matters

Address rules decide who can open an account. Mercury accepts a residential address as the principal place of business, but not a registered-agent, PO box or UPS box address. Relay asks each beneficial owner, meaning anyone with 25% or more or a senior role, for a physical US address.

Wise refuses virtual addresses and registration-agency addresses for its trading address. Rho's help center asks for either a US operating address or a US-based owner with an SSN.

Settle the address before you form the LLC, not after the first rejection.

International transfers often cost more than the monthly fee. Mercury sends USD wires for free, or for $15 with the option that moves intermediary fees onto Mercury, but charges 1% on non-USD wires.

Airwallex charges a per-transfer SWIFT fee on every plan, and Rho charges a SWIFT fee plus 1% to convert foreign currency. Wise prices outgoing wires from $1.13. For a business that pays overseas contractors, the transfer line is the cost that grows.

Key features to look for

Who can open it
Eligibility is set by each vendor's own help center, and the rules differ. Mercury and Relay both accept founders abroad, while Rho's help center asks for a US operating address or a US-based SSN owner.
Owner ID
A passport works at Mercury, and Relay accepts a passport alone from non-US citizens when the business has an operating presence in the US. Airwallex accepts a passport for international founders and, in some cases, an ITIN for non-residents. Wise asks non-US owners for a copy of a photo ID.
Address rules
Check whether the bank takes a residential address, a physical US address for each owner, or a US operating address. Virtual and mail-forwarding addresses are refused at Wise and Relay.
EIN route
The IRS online EIN form needs a US principal place of business and an SSN or ITIN for the responsible party. An applicant with a foreign principal place of business applies by phone, fax or mail.
Transfer costs
Compare the wire line before the monthly fee: free USD wires at Mercury, a fixed incoming domestic wire fee at Wise, and a per-transfer SWIFT fee at Airwallex.

Pricing

Every price here was verified on the vendor's own page in October 2026, in USD. Mercury checking has no monthly fee and no minimum balance, and Plus costs from $35 a month or $29.90 a month billed annually.

Relay Starter is free with 20 checking accounts.

Scale is listed at $120 a month and shown at a discounted $90 for a limited time, for 50 accounts, which is $1,080 a year at that price.

Wise quotes per-transfer prices on its US page: an incoming domestic wire costs a fixed $6.11, and outgoing wires start at $1.13.

That page dates its wire comparison to Q3 2025, so confirm the figures at signup. Airwallex Explore costs nothing per user and includes up to 10 free Spend users, and Grow is $12 per user a month plus a platform fee.

Airwallex charges its monthly fee per legal entity. Per-transaction fees also apply to FX and transfers.

Rho checking carries no monthly, per-user or minimum-balance fee, and domestic ACH, wires and checks are free.

Payoneer has no monthly subscription.

Its annual account fee of $29.95 applies only if the account receives less than $6,000 in any 12 months, and sending from a Payoneer balance to another country costs up to 1% plus up to $4.00.

doola Starter is $297 a year plus state fees and includes the LLC filing, EIN, registered agent and a US business address.

IRS business tax filings start on the $1,999 Tax and Compliance plan, also plus state fees. The IRS online EIN form needs a US principal place of business, and applicants abroad apply by phone, fax or mail.

Mistakes to avoid
×Opening before the EIN arrives: Airwallex's guide says online banks will not open a checking account on an EIN alone, so the EIN letter and formation papers must be ready before you apply.
×Using a registered-agent address as the only address: Relay needs a separate physical operating address when the legal address is a registered agent's, and Wise refuses registration-agency addresses for its trading address.
×Forming in Nevada without checking first: Wise does not onboard businesses from Nevada or the US territories, so check the state before you form the company.
×Treating the savings APY as checking interest: Relay's 1.19% to 3.21% applies to savings, and Mercury Treasury opens only at a $250K balance.
×Budgeting only for the monthly fee: Airwallex charges per SWIFT transfer, and Mercury charges 1% on non-USD wires, so a plan with no monthly fee can still cost more once you pay overseas.
Expert tips
→Ask each bank in writing whether an owner living abroad qualifies, before you form the LLC.
→Read each bank's prohibited-countries list before you apply, and check founders and controllers as well as the company.
→Price one overseas payment before you choose. Wise charges per outgoing wire, Airwallex charges per SWIFT transfer, and Mercury sends USD wires free while charging 1% on non-USD wires.
→Keep the EIN letter, formation papers and passport in one folder. Mercury asks for all three, and Airwallex asks for proof of formation and a government ID alongside the EIN.

The bottom line

Open Mercury when you already have a US LLC, an EIN, a passport and a residential principal address, and you want free domestic transfers.

Choose Wise Business when money moves in several currencies, and Relay when you need many checking accounts and can give each owner a physical US address.

Check Rho only if you can give it a US operating address, and treat Payoneer as a payments account until its support team confirms your eligibility in writing.

If you still need the company, start with doola, then read the doola review for what the Starter plan leaves out.

For a domestic account instead, the best business bank accounts page covers yield and branch access, and the free business checking page covers fees.

Frequently asked questions

Can a non-resident open a US business bank account in 2026?

Yes, at several banks and fintechs, provided the LLC is formed in the US and has an EIN. Mercury accepts a passport and a residential principal address. Relay needs a physical US address for each beneficial owner. Rho's help center asks for a US operating address or a US-based owner with an SSN, so the choice depends on which address you can give.

What do I need before opening one from abroad?

A US-formed LLC, the IRS EIN letter, formation papers, and a government ID such as a passport for each controlling owner. Mercury asks for all of these, plus an ID for each owner with 25% or more. The IRS says an applicant whose principal place of business is outside the US applies for the EIN by phone, fax or mail.

Which non-resident account has the lowest monthly cost?

Mercury checking, Relay Starter and Rho checking have no monthly fee on the entry plan. Mercury and Rho both give free domestic ACH and wires. Relay Starter includes 20 checking accounts at no charge. Airwallex Explore is free per user, but each SWIFT transfer carries its own fee.

Is doola a bank?

No. doola is a formation service. Its Starter plan costs $297 a year plus state fees and covers the LLC filing, the EIN, a registered agent and a US business address. Its FAQ says a passport is needed for the bank step, and the bank it names is Mercury.

Does Wise work for a non-resident LLC?

Wise's own blog calls it a great option for non-US resident LLCs and says it gives US account details without US residency. Its US help page requires a physical trading address, refuses virtual and mail-forwarding addresses, and does not onboard businesses from Nevada.

Are the balances FDIC insured?

Not directly. Mercury holds deposits through partner banks, with up to $5 million of coverage. Relay uses Thread Bank's sweep, which can reach $3 million. Rho's checking has $250,000 of coverage per entity at Webster Bank. Wise is not an FDIC-insured bank, and its pass-through coverage runs to $250,000 on interest-earning funds.

Can a founder from any country open a US business account?

No. Mercury will not open accounts for founders or financial controllers living in the countries on its prohibited list, so one restricted person can stop the whole application. Relay also publishes a prohibited-countries list.
